Should you buy a PDRN cream or a PDRN serum?

Short answer: buy the one that prints a number, and in the set we read that is more often the serum than the cream.

Format is the question everyone asks and it is not the variable that decides anything here. A cream and a serum carrying the same ingredient at the same level will deliver about the same amount of it, and the two products below carry it at levels that are not the same and, in one case, are not published at all.

The more useful question is how much is in the bottle, and whether the brand tells you.

What is this ingredient on a label?

On a Korean ingredient list, the thing sold as PDRN almost always appears as sodium DNA. Occasionally you will see hydrolyzed DNA or a variant with a source word attached. Those are the entries to look for, because the marketing name is not what the statutory list uses.

What it does topically is narrower than the packaging suggests. Most of the stronger published work on this compound comes from routes that bypass the outer layer entirely, and a leave-on cream or serum does not do that. A large biopolymer applied to intact skin stays in the outermost layer, which is where every topical product acts.

That is not an argument against buying one. It is an argument for not paying a premium tier for a trace inclusion, and for reading the number when a brand publishes it.

The serum, which discloses

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum prints its concentrations, and it prints a lot of them. Sodium DNA sits at a disclosed 100 parts per million. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is at 29,049 parts per million, sodium hyaluronate at 800, and then six further hyaluronate forms at 30 parts per million each with one at a single part per million.

Line those figures up and the product tells you what it actually is. The hyaluronate family is well over a percent of the formula. The PDRN is 0.01 percent. The badge on the bottle reads PDRN plus hyaluron as though the two were equal partners, and the numbers underneath say this is a hyaluronic acid serum with a PDRN inclusion.

That is not a criticism of the formula. It is a well built humectant serum with niacinamide, a dual functional cosmetic registration for brightening and wrinkle improvement, no fragrance ingredient and no essential oil. It is a criticism of reading the front of the box.

The cream, which does not

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Moisturizing Cream is the same brand, the same story and the same two named actives, in a cream vehicle. Sodium DNA sits tenth on the list with no figure attached, and ten hyaluronate derivatives run through the middle and back of it. Squalane, behenyl alcohol and two silicones make up a light occlusive load.

Position ten is genuinely higher than the serum's position for the same ingredient, and that is exactly why the missing number matters. Ingredient order stops carrying reliable information below the top few entries, and without a figure you cannot tell whether tenth place here means more or less than the serum's disclosed 100 parts per million.

Three claims on this page need flagging together, because they arrive under a heading that says testing results. A collagen figure of 68.3 percent, a plumping figure of 10.79 percent, and hydration for 100 hours. No test type, no participant count, no institution, no date and no linked report accompanies any of the three. A percentage under a results heading with nothing behind it is not distinguishable from an assertion.

Two smaller ones. The page says the cream never pills, which is an absolute no formula can carry without a wear panel, and no pilling test appears anywhere. And a cruelty free badge names no certifying body.

The formula is fine. The evidence block is the problem, and it is the reason we would take the serum on disclosure grounds if the ingredient is why you are buying.

The toner that reframes the question

LEADERS PDRN+ 1% Deep Glow Toner with Spilanthox 3% is here because it breaks the format assumption completely. Sodium DNA is printed at 10,000 parts per million, which is 1 percent, and that figure matches the number in the product name. A hundred times the serum's disclosed level, in the thinnest vehicle in a routine.

So the ladder across three products that all say PDRN on the front runs from 1 percent to 0.01 percent to unpublished, and the highest one is a toner. Whatever else you take from this, format is not the axis.

Read the rest of that label with the same eye. Niacinamide sits third, which is high enough to be doing work. Thirteen extract entries sit mostly in the back half, twelve botanical and one propolis, which is a wide sensitization surface for a product whose attribute table says all skin types. The firmness and elasticity claims have no test attached in the material we have. A seven free formula is claimed and the seven exclusions are never named, so nobody can check the count.

So which one, actually

If the ingredient is the reason you are shopping, buy on the printed figure rather than on the vehicle, and accept that at every level in this set it is a supporting ingredient rather than the thing doing most of the work.

If you want a cream, buy the cream as a cream. Judge it on the humectant stack, the occlusive load and the texture, which are the things it will actually deliver, and treat the badge as a badge.

And if the choice is between a product with a number and a product without one, the number is worth more than the format every time. That principle is not specific to this ingredient, and we laid it out in the ppm the brand printed itself.

Common questions

Is a higher percentage always better?

Not automatically, and here the honest answer is that nobody has published the dose response for topical use on intact skin. What a printed figure buys you is the ability to compare two products at all, which is a different thing from knowing what the right number is.

Does the capsule format change anything?

Capsule language usually describes how an ingredient is held in the formula rather than where it ends up. It can slow release and it does not move a large molecule past the outer layer.

Can I use a PDRN serum and a PDRN cream together?

You can, and you would be stacking two inclusions that are small individually. The more useful check is whether you are also stacking two niacinamide doses, since several products in this category carry both.

Why do the ingredient lists say sodium DNA instead of PDRN?

Because sodium DNA is the name the statutory ingredient list uses and PDRN is the name the marketing uses. Learning to look for the first one is most of the skill here.
