PDRN is on forty product names, and the lists actually back it up

We spend a lot of time on trend words that shrink when you read the list. This is the one that does not, and saying so is the honest thing to do.

Forty products carry PDRN in the name across what we hold. 36 of them have a full ingredient list we hold, and all 36 print a DNA entry.

There is no gap between the front and the list here. What there is instead is a gap between one product and the next, and it is enormous.

Why the name and the list agree

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a fragmented DNA preparation, usually from salmon. Unlike a mechanism word such as exosome, this one has an established ingredient name that maps onto it: sodium DNA.

So a brand putting PDRN on the front can print sodium DNA on the back, and the two texts point at the same thing. That is the whole structural difference between this word and the ones that never reach a list.

Sodium DNA is on 71 labels, so the ingredient is also common well beyond the products named for it. And 30 of them print an amount, which is a disclosure rate far above what most ingredient classes manage on the labels we hold.

This is a trend word behaving well. It is worth noticing when that happens, because the checking habit is only useful if it can return a positive answer.

The numbers are printed and they span five orders of magnitude

Here is where the reading gets demanding. The figures printed next to sodium DNA are not in the same neighbourhood as each other.

• PDRN 5% Active Ampoule prints 50,000 parts per million, which is 5 percent, and the product name says so.
• Direxo PDRN Solution Salmon Ampoule prints 10,000 parts per million, which is 1 percent.
• PDRN Pink Toning Gel Toner Pad prints 1 part per million.
• PDRN 100 Hyaluronic Acid Glow Pad prints 100 parts per million.
• PDRN Glow Ampoule prints 5 parts per billion.

From 5 parts per billion to 5 percent is a span of about ten million. Both ends carry the same three letters on the front of the box.

So the word tells you the ingredient is present, and only the figure tells you whether it is a formulation or a mention. That is a much better position than most trend words leave you in, and it is still a position that requires you to read the number.

What the number does not settle

Presence and amount are what a label can give you. Three things it cannot.

• Molecular weight and fragment length. PDRN is defined partly by fragment size, and no cosmetic label states it.
• Whether it penetrates. The injectable research that made this ingredient famous put it under the skin. A cream puts it on top, and those are different situations.
• What the evidence is for a topical product. The clinical literature people cite is largely about injected preparations in medical settings.

That third point is the one worth holding firmly. The ingredient is genuinely in the bottle, and the research most often quoted is not about the bottle. Both of those are true at once, and a good reading keeps them both.

Why the name spread this fast

Three things lined up, and none of them is about the ingredient working better than its neighbours.

• A clinic association. The ingredient arrived with a procedure attached, which gives a cosmetic version something to borrow.
• A printable name. Sodium DNA is short, sits neatly in a list, and lets a brand disclose a figure that sounds substantial in parts per million.
• Format portability. It dissolves into almost anything, so the same claim runs across toners, pads, creams, masks, sunscreens and eye products at once.

That last one is visible in the group itself. The forty names span nearly every format on the shelf.

What to check on a PDRN product

• Find the sodium DNA line. It will not say PDRN and it will rarely say salmon.
• Read the number and convert it. Five orders of magnitude sit inside this one word.
• Check where it sits in the list. A high figure with a late position is worth a second look at both.
• Judge the rest of the formula too. Many of these are hydrating bases with the PDRN added, and the base is the part you will feel.

Common questions

Is a higher percentage better?

Within the same ingredient it is at least comparable, which is more than most categories offer. It is not a guarantee of a result, and nobody has established a threshold for topical use.

Is this the same as a salmon DNA injection?

No. Same ingredient family, different route, different amount, different evidence base. The cosmetic version is not a version of the procedure.

Is it vegan?

No. It is derived from fish, which is one of the clearest cases where an ingredient list settles a sourcing question outright.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

The ingredient itself is not classed as an irritant. As always the rest of the list decides, and in this group the bases vary a lot.

Why do some labels print parts per billion?

Because the amount really is that small. A figure in ppb is a mention, and printing it honestly is better than printing nothing, which is what most categories do.
