What PDRN actually is, and how much of it is in the bottle

PDRN is the letters currently doing the most work on Korean skincare packaging. It stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, which is a fragment of DNA, and the research behind it is real. That research is also almost entirely about injection and professional treatment, not about something you pat on after a toner.

Which leaves an obvious question for anyone standing in front of a shelf: what is in the bottle, and how much of it.

Three of the products below tell you. The fourth is here because it makes the same mistake with a different ingredient class, and seeing them side by side is the fastest way to learn the pattern.

What the ingredient list calls it

You will not usually find the letters PDRN in a statutory ingredient list, because it is a marketing name rather than an ingredient name. What you look for instead is one of these.

Sodium DNA. This is the entry Korean lists most often carry when a product is sold on PDRN, and it is usually salmon derived.

Hydrolyzed ovum DNA. Ovum means egg. Worth knowing if you are buying for a vegan claim, because the two do not sit together comfortably.

Once you find the entry, look for a figure beside it. Korean labelling permits a concentration to be printed inside the ingredient statement, and in this category several brands do. That is the number that settles the question.

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum

The most useful label here, because it discloses both of its headline ingredients and you can compare them directly.

Sodium DNA is printed at one hundred parts per million, which is a hundredth of a percent. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is printed at just over twenty nine thousand parts per million, which is a little under three percent.

So the hyaluronic acid in this bottle is present at roughly two hundred and ninety times the concentration of the PDRN, and eight hyaluronate family entries span the list at different molecular weights. It is, by mass and by design, a hyaluronic acid serum with a trace of sodium DNA in it.

That is not a criticism. It is a well built hydrating serum with niacinamide and adenosine on the list and a Korean dual function registration for brightening and wrinkle improvement, which is a checkable administrative fact. There is no fragrance. Glutathione is on the list, which oxidises readily on air and light exposure, and the bottle is translucent rather than opaque, so keep it out of the window.

The badge saying PDRN and hyaluron is true as written. It asserts presence, and both are present. The number in the product name refers to nothing disclosed anywhere.

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid 100 Moisturizing Cream

The cream from the same line, and the place where the numbers stop being checkable.

The formula is genuinely good: salmon derived sodium DNA, a hyaluronate complex, a light silicone and acrylate base, no synthetic fragrance, and it absorbs fast, which is what the base is built to do and what people consistently report.

Three published figures do not survive a look. A collagen improvement percentage, a plumping percentage and a hydration window measured in days. For each one, ask what it improved on. Untreated skin, an earlier formula, a competitor and a version without the active are four different claims, and none is named. No method, no panel, no instrument and no institution accompanies any of the three.

The page also promises the cream never pills under makeup. That is a strong absolute for a claim about texture, and nothing tests it.

Buy this one for what it is, a competent lightweight moisturizer, and treat the three figures as decoration.

Laboreve PeachMicrobiome 78 PDRN Toner

The clearest illustration of the gap between the front of a bottle and the back.

The genuinely impressive number here is not the PDRN one. Lactobacillus ferment lysate is printed first of twenty one entries at seventy eight percent, in place of water, which is an unusually large disclosed figure and a real formulation choice.

The PDRN entry is hydrolyzed ovum DNA, printed last of twenty one, at eleven parts per million. That is roughly a thousandth of a percent, for an ingredient class whose supporting research rests on injectable or considerably more concentrated use. The brand describes barrier support and cell repair from that dose.

There are two further problems on the same page. The product is marketed as vegan PDRN, and ovum means egg. And the brand's own question and answer block asks directly whether the toner contains fragrance and answers no, while the ingredient list on the same page carries fragrance at position twenty. There is no reading where both statements hold.

The one line on that page we would keep is its own recommendation to patch test before first use.

MEDICUBE Zero Pore One-Day Peptide Serum

Not a PDRN product, and included because it shows the identical pattern one ingredient class over.

Ten peptides are named on this label and every one of them is disclosed, from single digit parts per billion down to thousandths of a part per billion. That is several orders of magnitude below what formulators treat as an active dose. The peptides are the product name.

What is actually working is underneath them: glycolic acid, salicylic acid and a lipophilic salicylic acid derivative, which is a real AHA and BHA combination, plus niacinamide and adenosine, with a functional cosmetic review confirmed on the brand's own specification block.

So it is a well constructed exfoliating serum wearing a peptide name. Which is fine, as long as you buy it for the acids. If you are pregnant, the salicylic acid is a reason to skip it, and the brand's own warning about sun sensitivity is worth following.

How to read this category

Find the ingredient name, not the acronym. Sodium DNA and hydrolyzed ovum DNA are what you are looking for.

Look for a figure beside it, and compare that figure to the other disclosed ingredients on the same list rather than to nothing. The Anua serum above is the clearest case: the same label tells you the PDRN and the hyaluronic acid levels, and one is hundreds of times the other.

Treat parts per million as small and parts per billion as very small. A trace is not nothing, and it is also not what a headline implies.

And do not let the acronym replace the rest of the label. Every product on this page has a genuine reason to buy it that has nothing to do with the letters on the front.

Common questions

Is topical PDRN worth paying extra for?

On the evidence published by the brands themselves, the levels disclosed are traces and the supporting research is built on a different route of administration. If a product is good, it will be good for the rest of its formula, and that is the part you can check.

Why is it in so many products right now?

Because it is a well known ingredient in professional treatment and the name carries over. That is a marketing transfer rather than a formulation one, which is why the disclosed levels are so much smaller than the prominence of the name.

Is salmon derived DNA a problem for allergies?

If you have a fish allergy it is a reasonable thing to check, though a purified fragment is a long way from a food protein. Egg derived versions are worth knowing about for the same reason, and for anyone buying on a vegan basis.

What should I look for instead?

The same things as always. A disclosed concentration for whatever the product is sold on, a filter list if it is a sunscreen, an absence claim you can verify on the ingredient list, and a regulatory designation if one is claimed.
