Five steps, not ten, for a first Korean routine

The ten step routine is mostly an export. It got repeated so many times outside Korea that people now arrive at the shelf expecting to buy ten things, feel overwhelmed at four, and leave with a basket that has three toners and no sunscreen in it.

Five steps do the work. Everything past five is preference, season, or a specific problem you are treating.

Below is one product per step, chosen because we could read the full ingredient list and check what the brand says against it. None of these is the only correct answer. They're examples of what a defensible version of each step looks like.

What are the five steps?

Wash, water, treat, seal, protect. That's the sequence, and the reason it's ordered that way is thickness rather than tradition. Thin watery things go on before thick ones, because a cream applied first blocks the layer you put over it.

Two of the five matter more than the other three. Sunscreen is the one with the largest effect on how your face looks in ten years. A cleanser that does not strip is the one that decides whether the other four are fixing damage you caused an hour earlier.

Everything else is adjustable.

Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser

The wash step, and a good example of what a mild one looks like on paper.

Four surfactants sit at the ordered top of the list, and none of them is soap. An isethionate, a taurate, a betaine and an acyl glycinate all work near skin pH, which is what a weakly acidic cleanser needs to be built from rather than merely called. Glycerin sits third. Ceramide NP, panthenol and hyaluronic acid appear further down.

Take those last three lightly. They're in a product you rinse off inside a minute, so they do not stay, and the brand's copy that credits them with post-wash comfort is crediting the wrong part of the list. The comfort comes from what the surfactants do not remove.

Two things to know before you buy. The brand's own FAQ says to use this as a second cleanse when you're removing makeup, which is unusually honest and also a real limit. And one English retailer page attributes seventy four minerals from deep sea water to this formula. The ingredient list says sea water with no origin, no depth and no mineral count attached.

One more thing for reactive skin. No fragrance ingredient is declared, and chamomile flower oil sits at position 22, so this is not a list entirely free of aromatic plant oils.

Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner

The water step. A Korean toner is not an astringent, and this is the version of the category with almost nothing in it.

Sixteen ingredients. No AHA, no BHA, no PHA anywhere. What's there instead is sea water, panthenol, allantoin, a couple of glycols and one protease enzyme, which loosens the protein holding dead surface cells together.

That enzyme is the whole reason to choose it or skip it. Dull, slightly rough skin has something to gain. Skin that already reacts to everything does not need a mild daily exfoliating step, and the label's own all skin types line does not acknowledge that. There's no absolute like that in skincare and this product is not the exception.

The brand documents three ways to use it, including soaking a cotton pad and leaving it on the face. If you do that, keep it short. A pad left until it dries takes water back out with it.

Best for: dull or slightly rough skin that tolerates a gentle enzyme Fragrance-free: yes

LAYER LAB Niozom Panthenol 5% Serum

The treat step, and the one on this list with the most useful label of all five.

The product name is the disclosure. Panthenol at fifty thousand parts per million, which is five percent, and niacinamide at forty thousand, which is four. Both printed. Behind them sit ceramide NP, cholesterol and phytosphingosine, the three lipid classes barrier work actually uses, plus a centella complex.

For a beginner routine, that combination is doing two things that are hard to argue with: reducing the tight, stinging feeling of a compromised surface, and giving you niacinamide at a concentration where the published work on barrier function actually sits.

The brand's own headline is where it slips. A figure claiming several times better inner hydration appears with no test type, no sample size, no comparison group and no institution attached to it anywhere on the page. Ignore that number. The two printed percentages are the reason to buy.

If you're tracking fungal acne triggers, two polyglyceryl esters on this list fall in the flagged class, and there's a small amount of olive fruit oil.

Best for: dehydrated skin with a barrier that stings when you apply things Fragrance-free: yes

Aestura Atobarrier 365 Cream

The seal step, and the heavy option. If your skin is oily, skip ahead to the note at the end of this section.

Its list runs ceramide NP, two synthetic pseudo ceramides, cholesterol, palmitic and stearic acid, which is the lipid arrangement the barrier repair literature works with rather than a single ceramide dropped in for the label. Across forty two ingredients there's no fragrance, no dye and no essential oil.

The brand prints a figure about ceramide remaining after washing, scoped to a comparison between its capsule format and a non capsule version. That's a formulation comparison, not a result on your face, and the sentence a shopper actually reads does not carry the scope. One more line claims the cream is usable from birth, and nothing in the material supports an age specific safety study.

The narrower safety statement does hold up. The brand says the formula excludes the ingredient categories people avoid in pregnancy, and reading the full list against those categories agrees.

On oily skin this is too much in summer. A gel cream is the better seal, and we compared the two textures in lotion versus cream for your face.

Goodal Clear Houttuynia Soothing Moisture Sun Cream

The protect step. If you only buy one thing on this list, buy a sunscreen, and this one is a reasonable daily.

Four organic filters. No fragrance, no essential oil, no drying alcohol. The SPF 50+ PA++++ rating sits in the mandatory Korean product information block rather than in marketing copy, which is a legally required field and one of the few numbers on a sunscreen you can take at face value.

One correction worth carrying into the store. At least one retailer lists this as a mineral sunscreen, and there's no zinc oxide or titanium dioxide on it at all. If you're specifically avoiding organic filters, this is not your product.

What to skip in the first month

Retinol. It's a good ingredient and a bad first purchase, because starting it at the same time as four other new products means you will not know what caused the reaction you get in week two.

Acid toners, for the same reason. So do essence, ampoule, eye cream and anything sold as a booster, which is a marketing category rather than a formulation one.

Sheet masks are fine and do nothing your cream is not already doing. Buy them because you like them.

Add one product at a time, two weeks apart. That's slower than the videos and it's the only way to learn what your face actually objects to.

Common questions

Do I need a toner at all?

No. It's the most skippable of the five. If your skin feels comfortable straight after washing and your moisturizer spreads fine, going cleanser to serum to cream is a complete routine.

Should I double cleanse every night?

Only when you wore sunscreen or makeup. An oil or balm first, then the foam. On a bare face, one wash is enough, and we went through the evidence in do you need to double cleanse.

Is a Korean routine different from any other routine?

The steps are the same everywhere. What's different is the texture range in between, since the shelf carries far more thin, light layers than a Western drugstore does, which is why the routines end up with more steps rather than more ingredients.

How long before I can tell if it's working?

Comfort and dryness change in about a week. Anything about texture or tone takes eight weeks or more, and judging a product after three days tells you how it feels, not what it does.
