What is Ceramide?
Ceramides are a class of lipid molecules that also occur in the outer layer of skin. Ingredient lists name them by isomer, so one label often carries several at once while the ad copy calls all of them simply ceramide. They dissolve in oil rather than water, so a formula built on them needs an oil phase or a carrier to hold them.
Ingredient lists write this family more than one way, and this page counts them together: Ceramide NP, Ceramide NS, Ceramide AP, Ceramide AS and Ceramide EOP.

What does the research actually show?
Two lists, taken from published studies on this ingredient. The first is what those studies support. The second is what they do not, which is where advertising most often runs ahead of the evidence.
What the evidence supports
- Barrier integrity improvement, when delivered as a complete physiological lipid mixture.
- In a double blind intraparticipant controlled trial (n = 58, mean age 46), a multivesicular emulsion with physiological lipids and glycerine improved barrier integrity after tape stripping (TEWL20 38.02 to 29.79 g/m2/h, p < 0.001), while an oil in water emulsion with glycerine but no physiological lipids had no effect (35.6 to 37.4) (CER-S5).
