Do you need to double cleanse?

Not every night. The answer depends on one thing, and it is not your skin type.
It is whether you put something on your face that is designed to resist water. Sunscreen and long wear base makeup are engineered specifically not to come off when they get wet, because that is the whole point of them. A water based wash is asking water to remove something built to survive water.
So the rule is short. If you wore sunscreen or makeup, an oil phase step first. If you did not, one wash is enough and a second one is just stripping.
Why an oil phase works and a foam does not
Makeup and sunscreen films are held together by waxes, esters and film forming polymers. Those dissolve in oil, not in water.
A balm or a cleansing oil is a solvent. You put it on dry skin, it dissolves the film, then an emulsifier in the formula lets the whole thing rinse away instead of smearing. That is the first cleanse.
The second cleanse is a normal surfactant wash, and its job is only to clear the emulsified residue the first step left behind. It is not doing the heavy work and it does not need to be strong.
Which is why the failure mode people report is usually the wrong one. Skin that feels tight after double cleansing has almost always been over washed on the second step, not the first.
When you should skip it
On a bare face day. If you wore nothing, there is nothing that needs an oil solvent, and one gentle wash is the whole routine.
In the morning. Nothing you slept in needs dissolving. Water or one mild cleanser is enough, and a lot of people do better with water alone.
When your skin is already reacting. Two cleansing steps on a compromised barrier is more surfactant contact than that skin needs, and cutting back to one is a reasonable first move.
Celimax Dual Barrier Purifying Cleansing Balm

The one we would pick for skin that reacts, and the testing is more specific than most.
It is fragrance-free, which in this category is a small group. Five ceramide species and cholesterol are on the list, plus panthenol, and the emulsifier set is a full PEG ester and sorbitan ester deck, which is the chemistry that lets a solid balm turn to oil and then to milk when water hits it.
The brand publishes dated tests with a named institution and stated panel sizes: a sensitivity and irritation test on thirty three adults, a non comedogenic test on twenty, and a waterproof removal figure of about ninety six percent on twenty. That is more structure than this category usually offers.
What is missing from all three is the result. A date, an institution and a sample size, with no pass rate, no comedogenicity score and no threshold. Deep cleansing is also the wrong word for what the waterproof test measured, which was removal of a film from the surface.
The ceramide purity figure describes the raw material rather than how much is in the tub, and this is a rinse off, so do not buy it as a barrier product. Buy it as a fragrance-free balm that happens to have them.
One claim that is genuinely checkable and checks out: the brand prints the roster of ingredients it says it excludes, item by item, which means you can verify it yourself against the list.
Best for: reactive skin, sunscreen and makeup days Fragrance-free: yes
HYGGEE Soft Reset Green Cleansing Balm

The other fragrance-free balm here, and a good lesson in reading the spec grid rather than the marketing.
The base is a cetyl ethylhexanoate and triglyceride pair in the first two positions, which are effective solvents for the waxes and film formers in makeup, with a synthetic wax giving it the sherbet texture that yields at skin temperature. A long list of edible plant extracts follows, and those are genuinely on the label rather than invented.
Two things to leave behind. An irritation index figure of zero is printed with no testing institution, no panel size and no date recorded anywhere, which makes a precise sounding number unassessable. And a price comparison site's spec grid tags this product for acne relief, which the brand's own material contradicts.
Tea tree is a consideration here for anyone who reacts to it, and the deep cleansing language runs past what a short contact rinse off does at the follicular opening.
Best for: makeup and congestion, on skin that tolerates tea tree Fragrance-free: yes
S.NATURE Aqua Rice Cleansing Oil

The oil rather than a balm, for people who find balms fussy.
It is fragrance-free, built on rice bran oil with a self emulsifier, and it carries a lipophilic salicylic acid derivative, which is a genuine keratolytic rather than a decorative botanical. For oily skin that wants a first cleanse doing slightly more than dissolving, that addition is the reason to pick it.
Two cautions that come straight off the list. The salicylic acid derivative means this is one to skip during pregnancy. And several of its esters and oils sit in the classes that fungal acne prone skin screens out, so this is not the first cleanse for that group.
Self emulsifying oils leave a thin film if the water is cool or the massage is short. That is the case for the second step, not an argument for more oil.
Best for: oily skin wanting a simple first cleanse Fragrance-free: yes
Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser

The second step, and the one whose brand says out loud what the second step is for.
Its guidance is that if you want makeup properly removed, use this as a second cleanse rather than expecting it to work alone. That is a brand declining to oversell its own product, and it is the correct instruction.
The surfactant deck is synthetic and amino acid based rather than soap based, and it publishes an actual pH range, which almost nothing in this category does. Glycerin sits third, with allantoin, panthenol, sea water and a ceramide behind it. There is no fragrance ingredient.
For a second cleanse this is close to ideal, because the second step should be mild by design. The heavy lifting already happened.
Best for: the second step, on any skin Fragrance-free: yes
The version that goes wrong
Two strong cleansers back to back. If your first step is an oil and your second is a soap based foam, you have used the mildest tool and then the harshest one. Pair a solvent first step with a mild second step.
Too much balm. The film people complain about after a balm cleanse is usually caused by using more than the emulsifier can carry off, not by the product.
Cool water and a short massage. Both leave residue on a self emulsifying formula, and both are free to fix.
Double cleansing every single night regardless. If you wore nothing, you are washing twice for no reason.
Common questions
Is double cleansing bad for your barrier?
Done properly it is gentler than one aggressive wash, because the solvent step removes the hard part without surfactant contact. Done as two strong washes it is worse than either alone. The variable is what the second product is, not the number of steps.
Can a cleansing water count as the first step?
On a light day yes, and on a sunscreen or long wear day no. A pad plus a mild surfactant is the mildest tool available and those films are built to resist exactly that. Use an oil phase on those days.
Do I need to double cleanse if I only wore sunscreen?
Yes. Sunscreen is the specific case this routine exists for. Modern filters sit in a film designed to survive water and sweat, and it is the step people most often skip removing properly.
What about in the morning?
No. Nothing you slept in needs an oil solvent, and one mild cleanser is plenty. On dry or reactive skin, plain water in the morning is a legitimate choice rather than a shortcut.
