Squalane is not the oil your skin makes, and one study used it as the placebo

Squalane is on 115 Korean labels and three print a level. It is a good emollient. It is also the arm a wrinkle trial used as its control.

Ingredients

Squalane is one of the best behaved ingredients in skincare. It is stable, it spreads beautifully, it has a proper safety assessment behind it, and it does the one job it is there for.

It is also surrounded by two claims that the published record does not support, and one of them is on nearly every product page that uses it.

Squalane is not the lipid your skin produces. Your sebum contains squalene, with an e, a polyunsaturated compound that oxidises readily. Squalane, with an a, is its saturated derivative. The saturation is exactly why it is stable enough to put in a bottle, and it is also why it is a different molecule from the one you make.

And the second one is stranger. In an eight week randomised, matched pair, double blind split face trial, squalane cream was the placebo arm. The active arm beat it. Squalane was the thing the researchers used as the control.

We read 115 Korean labels carrying squalane. Three of them print a level.

What squalane actually does

The evidence that holds is narrow and genuinely useful.

It is safe as used. A cosmetic safety panel reviewed squalane and squalene together, including updated use concentrations, and confirmed both as safe in the practices of use described.

It works as an emollient in real formulations. It appears as the emollient component of a marketed moisturizer whose full formula was tested clinically, alongside an occlusive silicone and a humectant set.

It is stable, which is the practical difference from squalene and the reason the saturated form is the one on your shelf.

Its origin is checkable. Olive derived and shark derived squalane can be distinguished by carbon isotope ratio, so a plant origin claim is a verifiable claim rather than an unverifiable one. That is worth knowing, because this ingredient has a real history on the other side of that question.

What it does not do

Four claims that turn up constantly and do not survive the record.

It does not restore your skin's own lipid, because the molecule in your sebum is squalene and this is not that.

It does not have clinical proof of hydrating or reducing water loss. The one review reporting hydrating activity attributes it to squalene and squalane together, and places the evidence in animal models and in vitro work. That is not a human skin claim.

It does not smooth wrinkles, and here the record is not merely silent but pointed the other way. In the split face trial above, squalane blended cream was the placebo and the active formulation was significantly more effective than it at week eight.

It does not drive other actives deeper. This is the one that surprised us. In the delivery study located, adding squalane lowered the permeability coefficient of every polyphenol measured, increasing retention in the skin rather than passage through it. The penetration enhancer story runs backwards.

There is also no traceable comedogenicity rating for it in this record, in either direction. The numbers circulating online do not trace to a source here, so we are not repeating them.

inyoe 3-Seed Cleansing Oil with 5% Olive Squalane

Product photo of 3-Seed Cleansing Oil with 5% Olive Squalane

The highest disclosed squalane level among the products on this page, on a seven ingredient list. One label we read prints a higher figure, 15 percent, on a product we are not covering here.

Squalane is third of seven, printed at 50,000 parts per million, which is 5 percent. The product name says 5 percent olive squalane and the label agrees, which is the whole test a name like that has to pass.

Seven ingredients is remarkably short for a cleansing oil, and it means you can read the entire product in one glance.

The thing to understand is what a 5 percent figure means in a cleansing oil. The rest of the oil phase is also doing the cleansing, so squalane here is one emollient among several rather than the working ingredient. It contributes slip and a lighter after feel; the seed oils and the emulsifier do the lifting and the rinsing.

The olive origin claim is the interesting part, and it is the kind that can actually be verified by isotope ratio if anyone wanted to. Most origin claims in skincare cannot be checked at all.

No fragrance entry and no essential oils.

S.NATURE Aqua Squalane Moisturizing Cream Wrapping Mask

The other disclosure, and the clearest case of squalane in the role it is actually good at.

Squalane is fifth of 45, printed at 18,400 parts per million, which is 1.84 percent. That is a front of formula position with a real figure attached, which almost nothing in this category offers.

Behind it sit five ceramides, cholesterol, glyceryl stearate and sorbitan isostearate. That is a lipid rich construction and squalane is a coherent part of it, providing the light spreading emollient the heavier lipids need to feel wearable.

This is also where the format matters. The mask sets as a cream film held against the skin, and the caution that belongs with it is that a lipid rich occlusive layer raises the effective exposure of whatever is underneath it more than a water based sheet would, because the film persists after removal rather than evaporating. Do not put an acid or a retinoid under it.

The all skin types line on the mandatory product information row is the claim that does not hold, and the formula contradicts it in one direction rather than both. There is no fragrance entry, no essential oil, no exfoliating acid and no drying alcohol across 45 entries, which is genuinely well tolerated. But a lipid rich cream system held under occlusion is a deliberate design for dry and barrier compromised skin and a poor match for oily or congestion prone skin.

DR.DIFFERENT Retinal 1000 Signature Cream

No squalane figure, and a good illustration of why position still tells you something.

Squalane is fourth of 21 entries. No level is printed, and above one percent the Korean ordering rule still ranks, so a fourth position on a 21 item list is a real emollient role rather than a token.

This matters because of what the product is. Retinaldehyde is disclosed at 0.1 percent here, and the whole reason to build a retinoid cream on squalane, cholesterol and a ceramide is that retinoid dryness is the thing that makes people quit in week two. The squalane is not the active and it is not decoration either; it is the part that makes the active tolerable.

That is the honest case for this ingredient, and it is a better case than the marketing usually makes. An emollient that spreads well, stays stable and carries no irritation risk of its own is exactly what you want around a strong active.

We went through this brand's disclosed retinal ladder in bakuchiol or retinol. Pregnancy caution applies here because of the retinal.

Centellian24 Expert Madeca Mela Capture Ampoule Max

One bottle, two squalanes, sixty nine positions apart.

Plant derived squalane is at position 3 of 110. Ordinary squalane is at position 72.

We have not seen a clearer demonstration that the same material can be a formulation decision and a label entry on the same product. The entry at third is doing emollient work. The entry at 72, in a 110 item list, is well below the one percent line where order stops meaning anything.

Neither carries a figure, so the total squalane load is not knowable. What the two positions do tell you is that the brand had a reason to put one of them near the front.

A word of warning about the rest of this label, because it is not a gentle product. There are six essential oils on it, including rose, geranium, lavender and orange peel, and retinyl palmitate puts it on the pregnancy caution list. If you came to squalane because your skin reacts to things, this is not the bottle.

Disclosed: nothing Fragrance-free: no

How to read squalane on a label

Read the position, because the figure almost never exists. Across the Korean labels we read, the typical squalane sits around position 10, in the top quarter of its list. So the common assumption that squalane is always a token tail ingredient is wrong: more often than not, it is placed where an emollient belongs.

When it is at the tail of a long list, treat it as a label entry. One product above has it at 72 of 110 and another has it second from last.

Buy it as an emollient and nothing else. It spreads, it softens, it is stable, and it does not sting. That is a genuinely valuable set of properties and it is the whole of what the record supports.

Ignore the restoring your natural lipid line. The molecule in your sebum is squalene, and the reason your product contains squalane instead is that squalene goes rancid.

Ignore the penetration enhancer line too, which is the one we would most like to see disappear. The one study on it found squalane reduced how much got through, not increased it.

And if a product is sold on squalane for anti-wrinkle results, remember that a wrinkle trial used squalane cream as its placebo. For the lipids that do have barrier repair evidence behind them, ceramides is the more useful read.

Common questions

Is squalane good for oily skin?

It is light, it is not an occlusive film former, and many oily skinned people get on with it well. There is no traceable comedogenicity rating for it in the record we read, in either direction, so we are not going to give you a number.

Is olive squalane better than sugarcane squalane?

The finished molecule is the same either way, which is why the origin question is about sourcing rather than performance. It is one of the few origin claims that is genuinely checkable, since carbon isotope ratio distinguishes the sources.

Can squalane replace a moisturizer?

Not on its own for most people. It is an emollient, not a humectant and not a strong occlusive. It softens and smooths what is there; something else has to supply and hold the water. The products above that work best pair it with ceramides, cholesterol and humectants.

Why is squalane in so many retinoid products?

Because retinoid dryness and flaking are the main reason people stop, and a stable, non irritating emollient is the sensible thing to build the base from. That is squalane doing its actual job rather than an added benefit.

Does squalane expire or go rancid?

It is the saturated form specifically so that it does not do this readily, and stability is one of the properties the record does support. Squalene, the unsaturated version in your own sebum, is the one that oxidises.

If you have a product with squalane on the list and cannot tell whether it is doing real work, send us the listing and we will find where it sits.
