A Korean routine for oily skin, in four steps that each do one thing

By two in the afternoon there is a shine across your nose and forehead, and you have already blotted once. So you go looking for a routine, and the first three you find have nine steps in them.

Nine steps is the wrong answer for this face. Every leave-on layer is more material sitting on skin that already produces its own, and most of the nine are doing the same job as each other anyway.

Four steps covers it. What follows is those four, with a Korean product on each one whose ingredient list we read from the first entry to the last, and an honest note about which part of the label is checkable and which part is a story.

Why does stripping the oil make it worse?

It does not, exactly. What it does is make the wash the loudest event of your day.

A soap based foam needs two things on the list to exist: a fatty acid such as stearic or myristic acid, and an alkali such as potassium hydroxide. That pair saponifies, and the result cleans hard and leaves the surface at a pH well above where skin normally sits. Skin recovers from that, but recovery takes hours, and during those hours the surface is drier and rougher than it was.

The counter reaction people describe as rebound oil is mostly a perception problem plus a comfort problem. Sebum output is driven by hormones and follicle biology, not by this morning's cleanser. What changes after a stripping wash is that you feel tight, so you reach for something heavier, and the heavier thing is what you end up noticing at two in the afternoon.

So the first decision is not which acid to use. It's whether your cleanser has that fatty acid and alkali pair on the back of the box.

Step one, a wash that does not saponify

Dr.G Weakly Acidic Cleansing Gel Foam is a clean example of the alternative, and you can confirm it in about fifteen seconds of reading.

There is no stearic acid, no myristic acid, no palmitic acid and no hydroxide of any kind on the list. What does the cleaning is five hydrophilic surfactants across three classes, two amphoterics plus an acyl glutamate, a methyl taurate and an alkyl polyglucoside, all of which stay functional below neutral. Citric acid sits fifth, which is the standard way a formula is pulled down the pH scale. Glycerin is second.

The brand does not print a pH figure anywhere we could find, so the weakly acidic part rests on the structural argument rather than on a number. That's a real distinction and worth knowing which one you're getting.

Two honest limits. Pollen extract is the last entry, which matters to anyone who reacts to pollen and is not disclosed at any level. And there is no solvent oil and no ester oil anywhere on the list, so on days you wore a water resistant sunscreen, this is your second cleanse and not your only one. The brand copy names sunscreen removal, and the list does not carry the phase that does it.

Step two, water without weight

The first leave-on step in a Korean routine is a toner, and for oily skin the job description is narrow. Add water. Add nothing that sits there.

FULLY Green Tomato Toner takes that to an unusual extreme. The list is four entries long: tomato fruit extract at ninety five percent, butylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol and a preservative. No oil, no gum, no polymer, no thickener, no fragrance, no acid. There is very little here for skin to object to and very little here at all.

The front of the box is a different document. The marketing runs on tomatidine, a compound that is genuinely researched but appears nowhere as its own entry on a four item list, so neither its presence nor its amount can be read off the label. Vitamin C is named in the English copy and no ascorbic acid or ascorbyl derivative appears among the four. And the retailer's mandatory information block records this as a notified functional cosmetic for brightening and wrinkle improvement while printing, in the same block, a list that carries none of the actives those notifications rest on.

Buy it as a thin water layer with almost nothing in it. That happens to be exactly what this step is for, and it is not what the page is selling.

Step three, the light cream people skip

Skipping moisturizer is the most common mistake in an oily routine, and the reason is a category confusion. Cream is not one texture. A gel cream and a barrier balm share a word and share almost nothing else.

beplain Mung Bean Pore Tight-up Soothing Cream is on the gel end. Across a long list there are exactly two emollient class ingredients, a caprylic capric triglyceride and a C18 to C21 alkane, and no ceramide, no squalane and no plant butter. Niacinamide sits sixth, which is high enough to be a real inclusion. Adenosine is further down. The back third of the list is a nine species hyaluronate tail, which is a humectant block rather than a sealing one.

The mung bean the product is named after is disclosed, and the disclosure is small: four separate mung bean extracts at ten parts per million each. That's a printed figure rather than a hidden one, which we prefer, and it puts the botanical in the story column rather than the working column.

One label contradiction worth your attention. A marketplace listing prints the standard functional cosmetic notice for this cream, and the brand's own product information table records that same field as not applicable. When two surfaces disagree, the brand's own statutory table is the one to read.

If your skin is dry rather than dehydrated and oily, this is not enough on its own. The difference between the two is laid out in lotion and cream doing different jobs.

Step four, the sunscreen you will actually reapply

S.NATURE Aqua 365 UV Sun Cream is built for the finish problem rather than the protection problem, and the finish problem is the one that decides whether a sunscreen gets used twice.

Four organic filters, no mineral filter of any kind. Two silicone type ingredients sit high on the list, which is the ordinary way to get a dry, non greasy feel out of a filter blend that is inherently oily. Niacinamide is eighth. Panthenol, allantoin, a hyaluronate set and beta glucan follow. No fragrance, no essential oil.

Check one thing before you buy it on a spec sheet. At least one Korean price comparison site classifies this product as a hybrid organic and mineral sunscreen, and there is no zinc oxide and no titanium dioxide anywhere on the ingredient list. If you are avoiding organic filters deliberately, the spec sheet will send you the wrong way.

The line about being suitable for acne prone skin appears only on a third party ingredient database rather than on the brand's own page, and nothing in the material we have attaches a test to it. Read it as someone's reading of the list.

What this routine does not include, and why

No clay mask on a schedule. Absorbing surface oil for ten minutes is a real effect that lasts about as long as the mask sits there, and doing it three times a week mostly buys you friction.

No separate pore product. Pore diameter is set by follicle shape and sebum output, and a topical routine changes how much is sitting in the opening rather than the size of the opening.

No exfoliating acid in the daily lineup. Acids belong in an oily routine, and they belong on their own schedule rather than stacked into a four step daily. We wrote out the frequency question in how often to exfoliate.

And no toner that promises to control sebum. Any product measured on immediate oil reduction is reporting a surface reading taken minutes after application, which is a reading about the film you just applied.

Common questions

Do I need a separate serum?

Not for this. The four steps above already carry niacinamide and a humectant load. A serum is where you add one specific thing you want, which is a different decision from building the routine.

Should I double cleanse every night?

On days you wore a water resistant sunscreen or makeup, yes, and the reason is mechanical rather than hygienic. None of the gel and foam cleansers here carries a solvent phase that dissolves a filter film. The longer version is in do you need to double cleanse.

Is a gel cream enough in winter?

Sometimes not, and the tell is not shine but tightness. If your face feels tight an hour after the cream, the answer is a heavier last step at night and the same gel in the morning, rather than swapping the whole routine.

Will any of this stop the two o'clock shine?

Not on its own. What it does is remove the two causes people add themselves, a stripping wash and a heavy layer applied to fix the stripping wash. Blotting paper is still the fastest thing in your bag.
