Does collagen in skincare do anything?

Short answer: it moisturises the surface, and it does not join the collagen in your skin.

That second half is the part worth understanding, because it is true no matter what the number on the label says. Collagen is a large protein. Even the hydrolysed fragments used in cosmetics are far too big to cross into the dermis where your own collagen network lives. What they do instead is sit on the surface, hold water and form a light film, which is a real cosmetic effect and a completely different one from the effect the packaging implies.

So the honest version of the question is not whether collagen works. It is what you are paying for.

We read 73 Korean labels carrying a collagen entry. 19 of them print a level, across 28 quantified entries, since one label often prints several. Those levels run from 10,000 parts per million at the top to a hundredth of a part per billion at the bottom, a range of about a billion to one.

What forms does collagen take on a label?

Four, and they are not interchangeable.

• Collagen and collagen extract are the unmodified protein, the biggest of the four.
• Hydrolyzed collagen has been broken into smaller fragments. Smaller means it spreads and binds water better, and it still does not reach the dermis.
• Atelocollagen has had its antigenic end regions removed. It is a purification step aimed at injectable and medical use, and on a cosmetic label it is a marketing signal more than a functional one.
• Collagen water is a water phase material, so a very large figure next to it is mostly a statement about water.

A single label often carries several of these at once, at different levels, which is why counting entries tells you nothing and reading the figures tells you a lot.

MEDIPEEL MESO COLLAGEN TONER

The top of the ladder, and the clearest case of a brand printing what it put in.

Hydrolyzed collagen is fifth of 55 entries at 10,000 parts per million, which is one percent. A collagen extract follows at sixth, at 1,000 parts per million.

One percent hydrolysed collagen is a genuine formulation level rather than a label dusting, and a front of list position at fifth is consistent with it. If you want to buy a collagen product rather than a collagen name, this is what one looks like.

Now the qualification, and it is the same one that applies to everything on this page. One percent of a molecule that cannot cross into the dermis is one percent of a surface humectant. It will make skin feel smoother and hold water in the top layer. It will not add to the collagen network underneath. The level tells you the brand was serious; it does not change the mechanism.

The rest of the toner is a humectant heavy build: eight forms of hyaluronate run through the list, and the lipid block sits at positions 41 to 47 with ceramide NP at 42, which bounds all of it below one percent. Put something occlusive over this, because an unsealed humectant layer in dry air can lose more than it gains.

Niacinamide is fourth and adenosine seventh, so the whitening and wrinkle registration this product holds is carried by those two rather than by the collagen. We wrote about that pattern in what adenosine actually does.

S.NATURE Aqua Collagen Peptide Triple Gel Essence

The middle of the range, and a useful demonstration that the peptide and the collagen are two different purchases.

Hydrolyzed collagen is sixth of 29 at 500 parts per million. Acetyl hexapeptide-8 follows immediately at seventh, at 50 parts per million. Adenosine is ninth.

Three printed numbers in the first nine positions of a 29 entry list is generous disclosure by any standard, and it lets you see the structure of the product rather than guess at it. The collagen is ten times the peptide, and both are well under the toner above.

This is a humectant only formula. There is no oil, no wax and no occlusive anywhere, so everything it deposits depends on the next step to stay put. As a light hydrating layer under a cream it is coherent and fairly priced in terms of what it discloses.

Two page claims to set aside. A green rating badge names no assessment behind it, and naturally derived is not a defined term, so neither is checkable.

Three collagen entries on one label at three different levels, in the format where none of it stays on your face.

Collagen is at position 35 of 68 at 7,920 parts per billion. Hydrolyzed collagen is at 38, at 2,500 parts per billion. A collagen extract closes the list at position 68, at 100 parts per billion.

Read those three together and the structure of this kind of label becomes obvious. Three entries carrying the product name, spanning a factor of about eighty between them, all disclosed in parts per billion, which is a thousandth of the unit the toner above uses.

Then the format decides the rest. This is a rinse-off with a contact time of tens of seconds, and a wash deposits only what survives dilution and drainage. A disclosed level in a cleanser is a statement about the bottle, not about your skin.

There is a second thing on this label worth more than the collagen. Potassium hydroxide is fifth and the fatty acids are at the front, which makes this a true soap base: an efficient, high pH wash that suits oily skin and does not suit a compromised barrier. Salicylic acid is at 29 and a lipophilic derivative at 31, both in the free ordering region, and an alkaline soap base holds them in the pH range where the keratolytic form is a vanishing fraction. Do not count this product toward a salicylic acid budget in either direction.

If you are pregnant, the two salicylates are on the list, though this is a rinse-off.

One practical note that has nothing to do with collagen: do not follow this wash immediately with an acid toner or a retinoid. Permeability is raised for several minutes after an alkaline wash, and whatever comes next goes further than its own instructions assume.

JUVELOOK PDLLA Protecting Cream

The bottom of the ladder, and the clearest example of a clinic word doing work an ingredient list does not support.

Atelocollagen is seventeenth of 48, printed at 0.01 parts per billion. Hydrolyzed collagen is twelfth, at 1 part per billion.

A hundredth of a part per billion is the smallest collagen figure we have found. Against the toner at the top of this page, that is a difference of about a billion fold between two products that both put collagen on the front.

The name is the other half. PDLLA refers to a polylactic acid used in injectable clinic treatments that work by placing material into the dermis with a needle, where it provokes a tissue response over months. A cream cannot do that, and polylactic acid is on this list at 10,000 parts per billion, which is 0.01 percent, at position 26. The word is borrowed from a procedure; the pharmacology does not come with it.

We would not call this a bad cream. Niacinamide is seventh, which is a real position for a real active, and the emollient base is reasonable. Judge it as a niacinamide moisturizer and the purchase makes sense. Judge it as a collagen or a PDLLA treatment and the label does not support you.

So what should you actually do?

Buy collagen products as moisturizers. That is what they are, and a good one is genuinely nice to use. A surface film that holds water makes skin look smoother immediately, which is most of what people notice and like.

Do not buy them expecting to replace what your skin has lost, because the molecule does not go where that would have to happen. No disclosed level in this article changes that, including the one percent at the top.

If you want the number to matter, read it in the right unit. Parts per million and parts per billion differ by a factor of a thousand, and this category mixes them constantly. One percent is 10,000 parts per million is 10,000,000 parts per billion.

Weigh the format. A disclosed figure in a wash is worth less than the same figure in something you leave on, because most of a wash goes down the drain.

And check what else is on the list, because in three of the four products above the ingredient most likely to change something is niacinamide or adenosine rather than the collagen. Common questions

Does topical collagen boost my own collagen?

No. Applied collagen does not reach the dermis and does not join the network there. Ingredients with published mechanisms aimed at that layer are a different group, notably retinoids, and they are regulated and cautioned differently for that reason.

Is hydrolyzed collagen better than regular collagen?

Better at the job it can actually do, yes. Smaller fragments spread and bind water more effectively at the surface. It is not better at reaching the dermis, because neither reaches it.

What about marine or fish collagen?

Source is a preference and an allergy question rather than a performance one. A fish allergy is a reasonable reason to check the source. It does not change the molecular size problem.

Is collagen water a good sign on a label?

It means the water phase is a collagen bearing solution rather than plain water, which is a genuine formulation choice. It also means a very large printed figure beside it is mostly describing water, so do not read it as a collagen dose.

Why do brands print collagen at parts per billion?

Because Korean labelling lets them disclose voluntarily, and some brands disclose every marketing ingredient at once. A figure like 0.01 parts per billion is more honest than silence, and it tells you the entry is there to be named.
