Do you need a repair cream after laser, pico toning or Botox?

Walk out of a laser or pico toning appointment in Korea and the first thing many people look for is a repair cream. The most important point comes first. Aftercare instructions from the clinic that did your procedure come first. If they gave you an ointment or a specific product, use that. Nothing here replaces those instructions.

With that in place, here's the cosmetics side. We checked 812 ad lines built on repair and barrier words, and 3.9% were backed by evidence. What skin needs after a procedure has less to do with the word repair and more to do with gentle moisture, sun protection, and leaving out a few ingredient types for a while.

How far can repair and barrier lines be trusted?

As of September 27, 2026, we'd finished checking 2,049 products. Of their ad lines, 812 use words like regeneration, barrier, recovery, repair or damaged, spread across 364 products. We left out packaging lines, such as recycled paper.

Across every ad line we checked, 12.8% are backed by evidence. Repair and barrier lines come in at under a third of that. The biggest group is partly backed. Usually a barrier ingredient really is on the list, but nothing supports the promised result, like a strengthened barrier or recovered damage.

The Korean word for regeneration on its own is rarer still. It turns up in 11 lines, and none of them is backed by evidence. Five are overstated ad lines and three have no source confirming them.

What about lines that say "use after a procedure"?

There are fewer than you'd think. Just 6 lines say a product is fine or good to use after a procedure. None is backed by evidence. Four have no source confirming them, one is likely but not proven, and one is partly backed.

"Rapid soothing after dermatology procedures" is one of the lines with no source confirming it. A line saying a human test confirmed the cream soothes skin after a skin booster procedure came back partly backed, because the test conditions weren't all printed.

Another line puts "after dermatology procedures such as laser" in a list of skin types the product suits. It also has no source confirming it. Being on a suitability list doesn't tell you what was checked on skin after a procedure.

Which ingredients do people pause after a procedure?

Only general principles here. The length and scope depend on the procedure and your skin, so ask the clinic how long to wait.

Clinics commonly suggest pausing ingredients that exfoliate or can irritate skin that's just been treated. Four groups come up most.

• Retinoids: vitamin A ingredients such as retinol and retinal.
• AHAs: acids such as glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid that loosen the top layer of dead skin.
• BHAs: salicylic acid and its relatives, which mix with oil and work into pores.
• Pure vitamin C: listed as ascorbic acid.

Leaving out fragrance while skin is reactive is also a reasonable default, since some people react to it.

Injectables such as Botox are a different kind of procedure from a laser that works on the skin's surface. So don't assume the same list applies. That includes when you can wash or massage the area, so follow the clinic's instructions here too.

Don't barrier creams leave those out?

Not always. Among products with repair or barrier lines, we had ingredient lists for 343. Of those, 50 (14.6%) list at least one of the four groups above. BHAs are the most common at 23, then pure vitamin C at 13, retinoids at 9 and AHAs at 9.

That means the name is on the list, not how much. Lactic acid, for example, is sometimes added in tiny amounts to adjust pH. Right after a procedure, though, it's safer to ask the clinic about any of these names you spot.

Fragrance is listed on 66 of the 364 products, too. A barrier word on the front doesn't settle what's on the back.

What does picking by ingredient list look like?

If the clinic only said to use a gentle moisturizer, check three things on the list: a barrier ingredient that's really there, none of the four groups above, and no fragrance. The three products below meet those conditions and each has a barrier line backed by evidence.

Round Lab Soybean Panthenol Cream has the line "Ceramide, cholesterol, and fatty acids for a flawless moisture barrier," and it's backed by evidence. Ceramide NP, cholesterol and stearic acid, a fatty acid, are all on the list. No fragrance is listed. The line about 50,000ppm of niosome panthenol, though, has no source confirming it. The panthenol printed on the list is 2,550ppm.

The beplain Cicaterol Cream (CICATEROL MOISTURIZER on the tube) lists centella asiatica extract at 3.5%. Panthenol, allantoin and madecassoside are there too, so the line naming those four for soothing and barrier care is backed by evidence. No fragrance is listed. The same page's "Fast and powerful trouble solution" is an overstated ad line. Containing an ingredient and promising a result are different claims.

AESTURA Atobarrier Lotion lists cholesterol and fatty acids such as palmitic and stearic acid. "#BarrierMoistureLotion" is backed by evidence, and "Strengthens damaged skin barrier function" is likely, not proven. No fragrance is listed.

Do you need a separate repair cream?

Not necessarily. What cosmetics do after a procedure is mostly gentle cleansing, moisture and sun protection. The ad lines we checked gave little reason to think the word repair on its own makes a cream better than a plain moisturizer. Check the list against the conditions above before the name.

Don't skip sun protection. When to start and which product to use should follow the clinic's instructions too.

Common questions

Can I put cream on the same day as the procedure?

Clinics differ. Some say ointment only, others say to moisturize right away. Follow the instructions you were given.

When can I go back to my usual retinol?

It depends on the procedure, so we won't give a date here. The clinic that treated you is the right source. When you restart, easing back in at a low frequency, as in starting retinol, is a sensible approach.

What if redness or stinging doesn't settle?

Don't try to ride it out with skincare. Contact the clinic that did the procedure. An ad line can't judge that situation for you.
