Panthenol and centella: five Korean products that print the number

Most of skincare hides its concentrations. The soothing aisle, oddly, is where Korean brands hide them least. Panthenol and centella turn up on labels with actual figures attached far more often than retinol, vitamin C or hyaluronic acid do.

That makes this a good category to learn how to read numbers, because for once you have several to compare. Two of the five products below print a panthenol percentage. Two print a centella figure. One prints seven separate concentrations, which is more than we have seen anywhere.

And one of those numbers turns out to mean less than its size suggests, which is the most useful lesson on the page.

What the two ingredients actually do

Panthenol converts in skin to pantothenic acid. It has controlled published data behind reduced water loss through the barrier and improved water content in the outer layer, and it has been in dermatological products for decades. It is a humectant with a real supporting record, which is a rare combination.

Centella asiatica is a plant extract whose activity is attributed to four compounds: asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassoside and madecassic acid. A product carrying a centella extract and a product carrying those four named acids are not the same thing, and that difference is where several of the labels below get interesting.

Neither ingredient is a treatment for an inflamed condition. Both belong in the category of things that make a stressed barrier more comfortable while it recovers.

ATOPALM Panthenol Lotion

Product photo of Panthenol Lotion

The highest disclosed panthenol level here, at ten percent, printed by the brand.

Behind it sit three pseudo-ceramide class materials in the lamellar arrangement this brand builds around, plus sodium hyaluronate and a light ester and butter load. As a construction for dry, itch prone skin with a compromised barrier, that is coherent, and the panthenol figure is not one you see often.

The reason this is not our first recommendation is on the same list. Six essential oils are present, including sage oil, patchouli, cardamom and two junipers. For skin that is reacting, a botanical aroma system is the wrong thing to be applying twice a day, and it is exactly the population a panthenol lotion is otherwise aimed at.

If fragrance does not trouble you and dryness with itch is your problem, this is a strong formula with a rare disclosure on the front.

Disclosed: panthenol at ten percent Fragrance-free: no

LAYER LAB Niozom Panthenol 5% Serum

Product photo of Niozom Panthenol 5% Serum

The one where the product name is the disclosure, and there are two figures rather than one.

Panthenol is printed at fifty thousand parts per million, which is five percent. Niacinamide is printed at forty thousand parts per million, which is four percent. Both in the name and both on the label. Behind them sit a small ceramide, cholesterol and phytosphingosine set, which is the three class lipid arrangement rather than ceramide alone, plus a full centella complex and beta glucan.

There is no fragrance and no essential oil. For a barrier that feels thin and stings when you apply anything, this is the most sensible deck on the page.

Two things on the page to leave behind. The headline about a several fold improvement in inner hydration and barrier arrives with no test type, sample size, comparator, testing body or date anywhere. And a badge claiming a top ranking names no ranking body, category or date, so there is nothing in it to check.

The two printed percentages are the reason to buy it. They are also, unusually, enough on their own.

Disclosed: panthenol at five percent, niacinamide at four percent Fragrance-free: yes

COSNORI Panthenol Barrier Emulsion

Product photo of Panthenol Barrier Emulsion

The one without a panthenol figure, included because its ingredient deck is the most complete here.

Five ceramides plus cholesterol and phytosphingosine, which is the whole physiological lipid set. Panthenol in the name and on the list. The full centella group, all four acids. Niacinamide and adenosine, which is the pair a Korean dual functional designation runs on, and the page does claim that designation.

Two qualifications. The field where the regulatory review status belongs restates the product category rather than answering, so a label sits where a confirmation should. And no level is disclosed for any active here, which is what keeps it out of the top slot in a post about numbers.

It is fragrance-free, light, and it has no petrolatum, mineral oil, silicone or wax, so its resistance to water loss comes from spreading emollients rather than a film. In cold dry air, layer something heavier over it.

Disclosed: none Fragrance-free: yes

Round Lab Pine Soothing Cica Lotion

Product photo of Pine Soothing Cica Lotion

The most disclosure we have found on any single label, seven concentrations printed, and the most instructive one to read carefully.

Pine leaf extract is printed at over four hundred thousand parts per million, which is above forty percent. That is not a trace ingredient. It means the extract is standing in for a large share of what would otherwise be water, the same choice the ferment toners make.

Centella extract is printed at just over eleven thousand parts per million, a little over one percent. Then the four centella marker acids are printed separately, each at roughly four tenths of a part per million.

Read those two centella figures together, because they are the lesson. The extract is present at a meaningful level. The named compounds the extract is valued for are present at fractions of a part per million. Both statements are true at once, and a label that gave you only the first would have told you less.

The rest is good: three hyaluronate forms, no fragrance, no essential oil, no drying alcohol, and the only emollient above one percent is a single light ester, which is why it feels weightless. A lipophilic salicylic acid derivative is on the list, so this is not the pick for anyone who reacts to salicylates, and the all skin types line in the disclosure block has nothing behind it.

Disclosed: seven concentrations, including pine and centella Fragrance-free: yes

make p:rem Inteca Soothing Cream

The moisturizer of the group, and a clean centella disclosure at a round number.

The centella complex is printed at ten thousand parts per million, which is one percent, and the brand states it uses a stabilised form of the four acid complex. Three hyaluronate forms, niacinamide and adenosine are on the list, and the functional cosmetic status for brightening and wrinkle improvement is stated in the right field on the page. There is no fragrance and no essential oil.

It is a light gel cream whose occlusion comes from spreading emollients, which is why it works under makeup and why it is not enough on its own in winter.

One claim to set aside. The page says a non comedogenic study was completed and a sebum reduction effect proven. Neither result is published with a method, a panel or an institution, and non comedogenic is not a regulated term to begin with. The nano size framing on the same page also asks the reader to accept a delivery advantage that nothing measures.

Disclosed: centella complex at one percent Fragrance-free: yes

How to choose

If the problem is a barrier that stings, take the serum with two printed percentages and no fragrance. It does the most per step and it layers under anything.

If the problem is dryness with itch and scent is not an issue, the panthenol lotion has the highest disclosed level of the ingredient you came for.

If you want one product rather than a step, the emulsion has the most complete lipid deck, and the cream is the better choice under makeup.

If you want light and fresh with genuine centella content, the pine lotion is the one, with the salicylate caution in mind.

And if a page gives you a centella percentage with no breakdown, remember what the pine label showed you: an extract figure and a marker compound figure are different numbers answering different questions.

Common questions

Is five percent panthenol better than ten?

Not necessarily better, and both are real levels rather than traces. Above a certain point you are choosing texture and the rest of the formula, not more of the active. The ten percent product here is the one with six essential oils, which is a much bigger difference for reactive skin than the panthenol gap.

Does centella actually reduce redness?

It has a soothing tradition and published support for its named compounds, and it is not a treatment for an inflamed condition. What it reliably does in these formulas is make a stressed barrier feel more comfortable, which is worth having and is not the same as clearing anything.

Cica or panthenol if I have to pick one?

Panthenol, if the complaint is tightness and water loss, because its evidence base for that specific job is the stronger of the two. Centella, if the complaint is that everything you apply feels irritating. Several of the products here carry both, which is the easier answer.

Are these safe for daily use?

Both ingredients are among the least provocative things in skincare, and the ones to watch on these particular labels are the extras: six essential oils on one, a salicylic acid derivative on another. The active is rarely the part that causes a problem.

If your skin is reacting and you cannot tell whether it is the soothing product or something else in the routine, tell us the order and we will read the labels together.
