What "dermatologist recommended" means on a Korean label
Korean rules steer ads away from doctor endorsements. We read 363 ad lines that lean on dermatology words, and the ones that held up had one thing in common.

In Korean cosmetics advertising, saying or hinting that a doctor or a hospital recommends a product is something the rules steer brands away from. The 363 ad lines we read that lean on dermatology words split cleanly, and not along the line you might expect.
Here's the short version. Nine lines, from eight products, claimed a doctor's or a clinic's backing or use, and none of the nine could be confirmed. Test lines that printed a date and a panel size held up close to half the time.
What do the Korean rules say?
The national law information portal carries a 2024 interpretation reply from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, dated December 12.
The reply points to Annex 5 of the Enforcement Rule of the Cosmetics Act, under Article 22. Per the reply, that annex bars labels and ads that say, or imply, that doctors, dentists, Korean medicine doctors, pharmacists, medical institutions or other medical experts designate, certify, recommend, guide, research, develop or use the product. The reply adds that a violation can bring up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won under Article 37 of the Act.
One caveat matters. This piece doesn't call any product a violation. It looks at which direction the rule points, and which ad lines lean that way.
How many lines lean on dermatology?
As of September 27, 2026, we had finished checking 2,049 products carrying 15,054 ad lines. Of those, 363 lines use words like dermatology, dermatologist, clinic, hospital or derma, spread across 240 products. We left out the standard safety notice printed on the back of Korean products ("consult a specialist if irritation occurs"), because it's a legal warning, not advertising.
Across all 363, 45 lines are backed by evidence. That's 12.4%, almost exactly the 12.8% rate for every ad line we checked. A dermatology word on its own makes a line neither more nor less trustworthy.
The shape of the line is what matters. Split four ways, the 363 look like this.
| Shape of the line | Lines | Backed by evidence | What stands out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doctor or clinic recommends it, stocked or used in clinics, number one at a clinic | 9 | 0 | 7 no source confirms it, 2 overstated ad lines |
| A test that names dermatology, derma or a skin research lab | 228 | 39 (17.1%) | Splits sharply on whether conditions are printed |
| Derma as a brand name or technology name | 118 | 6 (5.1%) | 25 say nothing (21.2%) |
| Other lines that mention a clinic | 8 | 0 | More than half are about use after a clinic procedure |
The split is keyword based, so a few lines sit on the border between groups. How we counted is at the end.
How should you read a line that says a doctor recommends it?
The nine read like this: "Gangnam dermatology clinic No. 1 cream," "carried at over 40 dermatology clinics nationwide," a line about an ingredient used in dermatology clinic skin boosters, "No.1 Dermatologist-recommended Brand in Korea," "Apgujeong dermatology & aesthetic exclusive serum." None of them names the clinic, says what was ranked, says who did the counting, or says which clinic uses it.
So seven of the nine come back as no source confirms it. The other two are overstated ad lines. Zero are backed by evidence.
The rule and the evidence point the same way here. When a clinic's name shows up in an ad, a shopper reads it as a doctor's pick. Behind the sentence, there's usually no document at all.
How to read it: treat these lines as decoration, not information. Decide on the ingredient list and the test conditions instead.
Can you trust "dermatologically tested"?
Only when it prints its conditions. This is where the most useful number shows up.
The 17.1% in the table covers all 228 test lines together. Split them, and 37 of the 228 print both a date and a panel size. Eighteen of those 37 are backed by evidence, which is 48.6%. The other 191, missing a date, a panel size or both, are backed 21 times, or 11.0%. Most of them just say the test was completed.
Same words, more than four times the hit rate. A line that prints its conditions gives a reader something to check against. A line that only says "completed" gives nothing.
There's one more thing worth knowing. On a Korean label, the word for dermatology sometimes doesn't point to a doctor at all. Names such as Korea Dermatology Research Institute or Dermapro appear in these lines as the lab that ran the test. A line like that tells you a test happened, not that anyone recommended the product.
The ISOI Moisture Doctor Jangsujin Moisture Cream page shows the contrast inside a single product. A line that reads "Primary skin irritation test (Korea Dermatology Research Institute, 2021.3.23~3.26, 31 people)" is backed by evidence. A line on the same page that lists a sensitive skin irritation test, a primary irritation test, a German dermatology test and a pore clogging test as simply completed, with no conditions, comes back as no source confirms it.
The Etude SoonJung pH 6.5 Whip Cleanser prints its conditions too. The pore clogging test names Dermapro, 20 adult women and a date window, and it's backed by evidence. The allergy test lists 51 people.
If it passed a test, is it gentle for everyone?
No. The test result and the sentence that stretches it are two different things.
The Abib Quick sunstick Protection bar prints an irritation test on 30 people with sensitive skin, with the lab and the dates, and that line is backed by evidence. The same page's "Even sensitive skin can use it with peace of mind" is an overstated ad line. Thirty people not reacting doesn't speak for every sensitive face.
A test covers what it tested. An irritation test covers irritation, and a pore test covers pores. Neither vouches for hydration or soothing.
What about derma as a brand word?
It's a name. None of the lines we read defines what derma is supposed to mean. Of the 118 lines using derma or dermatological science as a brand or technology name, 6 are backed by evidence (5.1%) and 25 say nothing (21.2%). Lines like "high-performance derma solution" give a reader nothing to check.
That doesn't make derma a bad sign. It just doesn't tell you what's in the jar or how much. The ingredient list does.
A quick filter
Skip the clinic names. Recommended, stocked, number one and exclusive, sitting next to a clinic or a doctor, were never backed in the nine lines we found.
Look for the brackets on a test line. A lab, a date window and a head count give you something to check. "Completed" on its own sells an impression.
Read only what the test measured. When an irritation result becomes "safe for all skin," take the stretch back out.
Read derma as a name. What the product does sits in the first few lines of the ingredient list. For reading test footnotes, see when the panel was twenty people. For certification words, see certified, but by whom.
Common questions
Are products sold at clinics better?
Where it's sold doesn't change the ingredient list. Read a clinic product the same way: the list first, then the test conditions.
Should I avoid products that say "dermatologist tested"?
No. The test may well have happened. Without conditions, though, there's nothing you can check before you pay, so leave that line out of the decision and judge on the rest.
How were these numbers counted?
We took the ad lines from the 2,049 products we'd finished checking and kept the ones containing dermatology, dermatologist, clinic, hospital, derma or dermatological science. We dropped the standard legal safety notice and survey lines such as "would buy again." The check result on each line is the one already attached to that product. We didn't rank products.
If a product you use leans on a dermatology or derma line and you can't tell how far to trust it, send us a label photo or the product name. We'll read what's behind that line with you.
