Korean lip care: three labels, and why none of them adds moisture

Lip skin is not like the skin around it. There are no sebaceous glands on the vermilion and no sweat glands either, the layer that holds water in is thinner than anywhere else on your face, and it is one of the few places you routinely abrade all day by eating, drinking and talking.

That has one consequence worth understanding before you buy anything. All three products below are seals. Not one of them contains enough water or humectant to add moisture to a dry lip. What they do is hold in whatever water is already there.

Which means the order matters more than the product. Put water on the lip first, then seal it. Apply any of these to a lip that is already dry and you have sealed dryness in.

What we checked

Whether there is a water phase at all. Two of these three are effectively anhydrous, which is normal for the category and rarely stated on the front.

What the film is made of. Petrolatum, polyisobutene and structural waxes do the actual sealing. The named botanical the product is sold on is usually a smaller fraction sitting behind them.

Whether the active ingredients are at a level that means anything. One of these discloses its ceramides and one discloses its oil, which lets you check.

And UV. Lip skin is thin and poorly pigmented and it is a recognised site for sun damage. None of these three carries a filter, and one of them advertises protection from the outside world without mentioning that.

The overnight one, and the format is the strongest thing about it.

The head of the list is esters, hydrogenated hydrocarbons, a dimer dilinoleate and a microcrystalline wax, with shea butter and coconut oil in there too. That is close to a textbook occlusive structure. Water appears once and glycerin and propanediol are the only humectants, so this is a film with almost no water of its own.

Worn for a full night, that film does soften lip scale and let it lift, which is the effect people notice. The brand describes it as dissolving keratin overnight. There is no keratolytic on this list at all: no AHA, no BHA, no urea, no enzyme. What happens is that scale held hydrated under a seal for eight hours swells and separates, and then you wipe it away in the morning. The brand's own two step instruction is the mechanism, and it is a mechanical removal rather than a chemical one.

The plumping language has nothing behind it either. There is no peptide, no hyaluronate and no irritant on the list that would produce it.

Titanium dioxide appears here with a colour index number attached, which is the labelling form of a pigment rather than a sunscreen filter, and the page records the product as carrying no functional cosmetic status. It is decorative, not protective. The brand puts it at night anyway.

Torriden Solid In Ceramide Lip Essence

The one that tells you its numbers, and the numbers are worth reading.

Five ceramide species are disclosed, from just over one part per million down to a few hundredths of a part per million. Cholesterol and stearic acid are on the list too, which means the full three class lipid set is technically present rather than ceramides alone. Sodium hyaluronate, panthenol, trehalose and glycerin are there as the humectant side.

Read the levels the way you would on a face product. These are trace amounts. What is doing the sealing is petrolatum and polyisobutene, and what is giving it the glossy liquid feel is a branched ester plus five plant oils, jojoba, shea, macadamia, olive and baobab.

That is not a criticism of the essence, which is a good glossy daytime seal. It is a correction to the reason you might buy it. If you want a barrier product because your lips crack, this is a competent occlusive whose ceramide content is a garnish.

Two things to note. The page says all skin types with no irritation testing behind it, and five plant lipids plus a seaweed extract are exactly the class that a small number of people react to. And a lip product is partly swallowed, which no skin type category addresses.

sidmool JOJOBA Lip Essence

The cheapest of the three and the most honest about its own construction, once you read the list.

It is twelve ingredients: polyisobutene, petrolatum, an ester, jojoba oil printed at three percent, babassu oil, microcrystalline wax, sunflower oil, royal jelly extract, an emulsifier, vitamin E, orange peel oil and limonene.

Printing the jojoba figure inside the ingredient statement is real disclosure and more than most balms offer. It also lets you see the causal problem in the marketing. The sentence credits the highest hydration tier to that three percent of jojoba, while the three film formers ahead of it are each present at or above that level under Korean ordering rules. Those three are doing the sealing. Jojoba is a liquid wax ester, which makes it a pleasant emollient with a light feel, and that is a texture argument rather than a hydration ranking.

There is no humectant at all on this list. No water, no glycerin, no polyol, no hyaluronate. It cannot add moisture to a dry lip, only keep what is there.

Two cautions. This variant is the one described as carrying only the raw material scent, and orange peel oil and limonene are still declared on it, which matters on split or fissured lips because terpenes are taken up far more readily through a broken surface. Royal jelly extract is on the list, so avoid it if you react to bee products. And the page says it protects lips from the outside world without a UV filter anywhere on the formula, which leaves out the largest environmental exposure lips face.

How to actually use any of these

Water first, seal second. A hydrating toner or essence pressed onto the lip before the balm turns the film from a seal over dry tissue into a seal over hydrated tissue. This single change does more than switching products.

Give it the night. Occlusion works on residence time, not on dose. Sleep is the only long stretch with no eating, drinking or talking to wear the film off, which is why the overnight format exists.

Do not scrub first. Exfoliating and then sealing sounds efficient and is the worst version of this routine. A freshly abraded lip takes up fragrance components far more readily, and two of these three declare a fragrance material. Separate them by days.

Wear a lip product with an actual UV filter in daylight. None of these three has one, and the fact that all three read as protective is exactly why this is worth saying.

Common questions

Why do my lips feel worse the more balm I use?

Usually because you are sealing dry tissue and reapplying instead of hydrating. An occlusive with no humectant behind it locks in whatever state the lip is in. Add a water step underneath and use the balm less often rather than more.

Are ceramides in a lip product doing anything?

At the levels disclosed on the one product here that tells you, they are a small addition to a formula whose real work is done by petrolatum and wax. A disclosed trace is still better than an undisclosed one, because it lets you judge for yourself.

Is petrolatum bad for lips?

No, and it is the most reliable sealing ingredient in the category. Nothing else holds water in as consistently for as little money. The reasonable objection to it is aesthetic rather than dermatological.

What about lip sunscreen?

It is the gap in this whole category. Lip vermilion is thin and poorly melanised and gets a lot of direct sun, and none of the three products here carries a filter. If you are outdoors, a lip product with a stated protection rating is the one to add.
