Running a four night cycle with Korean products
Skin cycling spread because it solved an actual problem. People were using an acid, a retinoid and a vitamin C every night, wondering why their face burned, and nobody had told them that more actives is not more results.
The fix was a calendar. Exfoliate one night, retinoid the next, then two nights where you do nothing except repair.
The part that gets lost in the videos is that the schedule only works if each product is doing the job that night is for. Two of the four nights are supposed to be boring, and a lot of routines quietly break that rule.
What is each night for?
Night one loosens and removes dead surface cells. Night two turns over the cells underneath. Nights three and four give the barrier time to rebuild the lipid it lost during the first two.
That last part is the mechanism, not the filler. Exfoliation and a retinoid both raise water loss through the outer layer for a few days, and the recovery nights are when a lipid formula gets to work on skin that is not simultaneously being stripped.
So the product test for each night is narrow. Night one needs a real keratolytic. Night two needs a retinoid you can dose. Nights three and four need lipids and nothing that exfoliates, which is where most routines fail without noticing.
Night one, the exfoliation night
Isntree Chestnut BHA 0.9% Clear Toner is a clean example of what this night should carry. Betaine salicylate sits sixth of twenty one ingredients, which is a salicylic acid derivative and an oil soluble one, so it partitions into sebum and works inside the follicle opening rather than only on flat surface.
There's no fragrance and no essential oil on the list.
The gap is the number in the name. The brand's own page explains that a BHA performs best between pH 3.5 and 4.0, and then never prints the pH of this one anywhere. It also never discloses the acid concentration in a way you can check against that 0.9 in the name. So you're told the mechanism and left without the two variables that would let you judge the dose.
One line does run past the chemistry. The page describes the acid penetrating deep into skin, and salicylate action stops in the outer layer and the follicle. Deep is not where it goes.
Best for: oily skin with congestion, one night in four Skip if: you're pregnant, since salicylate derivatives are on the avoid list
Night two, the retinoid night
DR.DIFFERENT Retinal 500 Signature Cream discloses the thing that matters most, which is the concentration. Retinal at 0.05 percent, printed.
Retinal is one conversion step closer to the acid form than retinol is, so at the same number on the box it's faster and it stings more. That's the trade, and the reason a disclosed 0.05 percent is more useful than a bigger number with no percentage.
The base is doing sensible work underneath. Shea butter, squalane, cholesterol and ceramide NP make this a cream that buffers its own active rather than a thin serum that leaves the barrier exposed.
Two cautions that are not optional. Retinoids are on the pregnancy avoid list, and this one should not share a night with an acid or a vitamin C, which is the entire point of putting it on its own night in the first place. Oleic acid on the list is worth knowing about for anyone tracking fungal acne triggers.
The one piece of marketing here is the retailer tag calling it an entry level retinal. There's a ladder of higher concentrations in the same line, so the tag is relative positioning rather than a statement about your skin.
We wrote the longer version of how to start without peeling for three weeks in starting retinol.
Best for: first retinoid, one night in four Skip if: pregnant or nursing
Nights three and four, the ones that do the repair
This is where routines quietly fail, because a recovery night is not the same as a night off.
ZEROID Dermanewal Repair Cream is built for this slot. Twenty four ingredients, no fragrance, no drying alcohol, with a silicone elastomer film for the physical seal and a pseudo ceramide plus phytosterols for the lipid part. Madecassoside and panthenol sit alongside them.
The brand's own layering guidance names this use directly, and it's the rare case where the marketing and the mechanism point the same way: a lipid film over skin that was exfoliated or retinized two nights ago is exactly the standard practice.
Older brand material claims the product raises antimicrobial peptide production and promotes active skin metabolism. Neither appears on the current ingredient list in a form we could trace, and a breathable film reducing water loss is a different and much smaller statement than stimulating metabolism.
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Capsule Toner is the interesting one to check, because it looks like a pure recovery product and is not quite. Ceramide NP, cholesterol and sphingolipids are on the list, which is the three lipid class set barrier work uses. Gluconolactone is sixth.
Gluconolactone is a PHA. It's the mildest of the common acid families and it also behaves as a humectant, so this is not a warning to avoid the product. It is a reason to know it's there. If you're running an acid night, a retinoid night, and then a PHA on both of your recovery nights, you're exfoliating four nights out of four at low strength.
Three numbers on that page do not survive a look. A seventy two hour hydration figure with no method attached, a barrier protection multiple measured against wipe off toner as a category rather than a product, and an absorption comparison against an unnamed toner from the same parent company.
Best for: the two nights when nothing should be working hard Fragrance-free: yes
Why the calendar matters more than the products
You can run this cycle with cheaper products and get most of the benefit, because the active variable is frequency rather than brand.
The reverse is not true. A good four product set used every night is just the routine people had before skin cycling existed, and it produces the same flaking around the nose in week three.
Count the acids you're actually applying across a week, including the ones in cleansers and toners you did not think of as exfoliating. That count surprises most people, and it's the number that decides whether the cycle is doing anything at all. We walked through how to run it in how often to exfoliate.
Who should not run this
Anyone whose barrier is currently compromised. If your skin stings on application of a plain moisturizer, both of the first two nights make that worse before they make it better, and recovery nights alone are the better routine until the stinging stops.
Anyone pregnant, for the retinoid night and the salicylate night both.
And anyone starting five new products at once. Add the recovery nights first, then the retinoid, then the acid, two weeks apart. A cycle you built in one evening will tell you nothing about which step your skin objected to.
Common questions
Can I use a hydrating toner on the acid and retinoid nights?
Yes, and it helps. A watery humectant layer with no acid in it does not compete with either active. The thing to avoid on those nights is a second exfoliant, not moisture.
What if four nights is too aggressive?
Stretch it. Five or six nights per cycle is a real option, and on sensitive skin the recovery block is the part to lengthen rather than the actives.
Does the sunscreen change during the cycle?
No. It stays daily and it matters more during a cycle than outside one, since freshly turned over surface has less accumulated photoprotection than mature surface does.
Can I put the acid and retinoid on the same night if I am short on time?
That's the routine skin cycling exists to replace. Both raise irritation on the same barrier and the combined dose is not something you can estimate in advance, especially here, where neither product publishes a pH.
If a product you own is sold as gentle and you cannot tell which night it belongs to, send us the listing and we will read the ingredient list with you.
