Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid, a larger relative of the alpha hydroxy acids. Formulators use it both as an acid and as a chelating agent that ties up trace metals in a formula. Its molecule is bigger than glycolic acid, so it behaves differently in a mix and shows up where a brand wants a lower free acid level.
