Korean toner pads: five labels, and what the pad is doing that the formula is not
Twelve of sixteen Korean toner pads disclose a concentration, which is a good rate. The improvement figures are another matter: a textured pad is a wipe.
Toner pads are one of the better disclosed formats in Korean skincare. Of the sixteen we read, twelve print a concentration for something. After the cleansing tissues, where only four of thirteen printed anything, that is a relief.
The problem in this category is not disclosure. It is that a toner pad is two things at once, and the claims usually credit the wrong one.
A pad with a textured side is a wipe. When a brand publishes a keratin improvement figure measured after using a textured pad, a large part of what was measured is mechanical removal, not the formula. The same applies to a hydration figure taken immediately after a water heavy essence, which routinely jumps off a small baseline.
Nine of the sixteen are fragrance-free, eight carry essential oils, and five carry a pregnancy caution ingredient.
beplain Cicaterol Blemish Pad
The most instructive disclosure in the category, because the number quietly works against the sentence it is printed under.
Centella extract is ninth of 36, printed at 0.1 percent.
Now read the rest of the list. Asiaticoside is at 32, madecassoside at 36, and the other centella markers sit near them, all with no figures at all. So the total centella load exceeds 0.1 percent by an amount nobody states.
The label is accurate about one entry and quietly misleading about the ingredient family it names. That is a subtler failure than an invented number, and it is the one worth learning to spot: a disclosure on one member of a group can make a group look smaller or larger than it is.
The free-from claim here does check out entry by entry. There is no denatured alcohol, no ethanol, no fragrance entry and none of the declared allergens. Two odour bearing terpenoids do sit near the end, terpinen-4-ol at 29 and bisabolol at 30, so the product is free of fragrance entries rather than necessarily odourless.
A third party line describing it as concentrated is not supported by the only disclosed figure on the label, and the blemish mark claim has no human application test attached.
Disclosed: centella extract at 0.1 percent Fragrance-free: yes
Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Pad
A well built hydrating pad, and the clearest unit lesson in this article.
Birch sap is fourth of 24, printed at 10,967 parts per million.
That number looks substantial. It is 1.0967 percent. It reads as large precisely because the brand chose parts per million over percent, and at just over one percent birch sap is a minor aqueous extract rather than the base the naming implies.
This is worth internalising because it is the most common way a figure misleads without being false. Ten thousand of anything sounds like a lot. Convert it before you react to it.
What the pad is actually good at is on the rest of the list, and it is coherent: water, dipropylene glycol and glycerin at the front, then a xylitol group, then three hyaluronate forms at 10, 14 and 15. It is built for water binding and essentially nothing else, with no fragrance entry and no essential oil.
One marketing claim does not survive. A retail listing describes a triple layer sheet, and a sweep of three brand surfaces for any fabric or construction term returns zero occurrences. No brand surface states the sheet construction at all, so the fabric is an assertion with nothing behind it.
Use it as a first hydrating step in place of a poured toner, and put something occlusive over it.
Disclosed: birch sap at 10,967 parts per million, which is 1.1 percent Fragrance-free: yes
Hanyul Pure Artemisia Calming Pad

The largest disclosed figure in this piece, with a comparison claim that is unusually well documented and a fragrance placement that is not.
Mugwort leaf water is fourth of 28 at 18,944 parts per million, which is about 1.89 percent. A mugwort leaf extract follows at 26 at 10 parts per million.
The headline says the mugwort is four times stronger than centella. Normally that is where we would stop reading, but this brand does something almost nobody does: it prints the comparator and the method in its own footnote. The comparison is against the company's own centella extract, and the evidence is in vitro.
That footnote is the most valuable thing on the page. It converts an unfalsifiable boast into an assessable one, and what it tells you is that the four times figure is a cell assay result about raw materials, not a result about faces. We would rather have that than a bare number.
A second disclosure deserves the same credit: the brand states that the marketing name corresponds to 황해쑥 on the ingredient list, which closes a gap this format usually leaves open.
Now the part that does not hold. The page describes this as a low irritation pad for sensitised skin, and fragrance sits at position 11 of 28, which is unusually high for a product aimed at reactive skin, with no allergen breakdown given. A low irritation claim and an undisclosed fragrance at eleventh position are in tension on the same page.
A barrier improvement line also has no measurement behind it, and the formula carries no ceramide, no cholesterol and no fatty acid.
Disclosed: mugwort leaf water at 18,944 parts per million Fragrance-free: no
Torriden Dive In Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Multi Pad
A clean hydrating pad with the emptiest sheet claim we found.
Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is printed at 500 parts per million, at position 8. A note on reading this one: the positions here come from the English ingredient statement because the Korean list is empty on our record, and the two versions do not fully agree with each other, so treat the ordering as indicative.
The claim to look at is the sheet. The page says the fabric absorbs up to twenty times essence. Twenty times what? Its own weight, its own volume, or something else is never stated, and no archived surface gives a fabric mass, thickness, fibre or weave. It is a ratio with no denominator, which is a shape worth recognising because it appears everywhere in this format.
A cooling claim has the same problem in a different direction. Searching for menthol, menthyl, menthoxy and camphor returns nothing on either ingredient version. Any coolness here is water evaporating off a wet pad, which is a property of wet pads generally rather than a formulated effect.
The five type hyaluronic acid count is exact and the count is granted. What follows it overreaches, because the crosspolymer among the five is the largest molecule and the least mobile, so a claim about building networks deep in the skin does not follow from the list.
A vegan and packaging certification is claimed with no certifying body and no registration number anywhere.
Disclosed: hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid at 500 parts per million Fragrance-free: yes
Abib Heartleaf Essence Pad Clear Touch

The pad that makes the mechanical point most clearly, because the brand tells you exactly how the two sides differ.
Heartleaf extract is sixth of 38 at 7,150 parts per million, which is 0.715 percent.
The usage is unusually specific. A plain hole type side goes on the cheeks for fifteen minutes; a hook textured towel side is then used to wipe, and the brand assigns that side to keratin and sebum removal. So one product is a soak and a wipe, in that order.
Which brings us back to the numbers. The published keratin improvement figure of 94.13 percent was measured after using a product whose own design includes a textured wipe, and searching the 38 entries for the exfoliating acid class returns nothing. There is no chemical exfoliant on this label to credit, so the figure is substantially recording what the hook side did mechanically.
The hydration figure of 274 percent is the same shape, and the brand's own footnote marks the effect temporary.
The soothing and mark figures are better supported: a named contract laboratory, twenty participants and a stated window, which is more than most pages give you even if the report is not linked.
Because half of this product is a wipe, do not pair it with an acid or a retinoid in the same session. The conflict is mechanical rather than chemical, and the brand's own guidance points the same way.
Disclosed: heartleaf extract at 7,150 parts per million Fragrance-free: yes
How to buy a toner pad
Decide whether you want a soak or a wipe. A smooth pad delivers essence. A textured or embossed pad also abrades. Both are legitimate, they are not the same product, and only one of them should be anywhere near a retinoid night.
Convert the units before you are impressed. Ten thousand parts per million is one percent. This category prints parts per million more than any other we have read, and the effect is to make ordinary levels look extraordinary.
Distrust improvement figures measured immediately after use, especially on keratin and hydration. The first is measuring the wipe and the second is measuring wet skin. The brands that mark these as temporary in a footnote are being straight with you.
Check where the fragrance sits, because this category is split almost evenly: nine of sixteen are fragrance-free and the rest are not, and one product here puts fragrance at position 11 while selling itself for sensitised skin.
And check whether the disclosed figure covers the whole ingredient group or one member of it. The beplain pad above is the clearest example: 0.1 percent on one centella entry, with four more centella entries carrying no number at all. For why printed figures matter this much, the ppm the brand printed itself is the fuller argument, and the difference between a toner pad and a cleansing pad is in toner pads and cleansing pads.
Common questions
Are toner pads better than a liquid toner?
They are a delivery format, not a better formula. The pad adds convenience, a measured dose and, if it is textured, some mechanical action. Whether that is better depends on whether you wanted the abrasion.
Can I use a toner pad every day?
A smooth hydrating pad, generally yes. A textured one is doing physical exfoliation every time, so treat it like an exfoliating step and start a few times a week.
Do toner pads replace exfoliation?
Some of them are exfoliation, by friction rather than by acid. That is worth knowing because it does not appear in the ingredient list, and one product here shows a large keratin figure with no exfoliating acid on the label at all.
Why are the pads soaked in so much essence?
Because the sheet has to stay wet in the tub and still carry enough liquid to cover a face. It is also why hydration readings taken straight afterwards look so dramatic.
Is a bigger pad better?
It changes how many strokes you need, not how much active is present. Size claims are about coverage, and coverage is not dose.
If you have a toner pad and cannot tell whether its number covers the whole ingredient family, send us the listing and we will count the entries.
