What is this product?

PO:DL's Chestnut Retinal Pore Reset Solution Capsule Cream sells a retinoid and discloses it at a level that cannot do retinoid work: retinal is the last of its 34 capsule-phase ingredients at 0.01 ppb, which is 0.00000001 percent, against the 0.05 to 0.1 percent used in published retinal research. Two further retinoids, retinol and retinyl palmitate, sit just ahead of it with no amount given, so any real retinoid effect comes from those rather than from the one on the label. Anyone pregnant or planning to be should skip it on that basis alone. The 55g cream is otherwise gentle and well built, two phases and 51 ingredients with no fragrance, no declared allergen, no exfoliating acid and no drying alcohol, led by niacinamide in both phases.

What makes it different?

The structure is the honest differentiator: this is a two-phase product, a 17-ingredient gel and a 34-ingredient capsule concentrate, and the split is real rather than decorative, because the gel carries no oil or lecithin at all while every lipid in the product sits in the capsule. Chestnut shell extract, the other half of the name, is disclosed in both phases at very different strengths, 125 ppm in the gel and 50 ppb in the capsule. Niacinamide appears in both phases, which is where the tone and pore claims can actually rest. The retinal cannot carry what the name asks of it at 0.01 ppb, and the two undisclosed retinoids behind it make the formula's real strength unknowable in either direction. For anyone avoiding retinoids in pregnancy the presence of three of them settles the question regardless of level.
