Korean sunscreens for oily skin, judged on whether you will reapply them
The sunscreen you own is probably fine. The problem is that you put on about a third of what the rating assumes, once, at eight in the morning, and then you do not touch it again because reapplying over a shiny face is unpleasant.
That is the actual variable on oily skin, and it is not a variable the box can tell you about. SPF is measured at a thickness almost nobody applies, and applying half gives you considerably less than half the protection. So the useful question for this skin type is not which number, it is which one you will put on generously and then put on again.
Below are four Korean sunscreens read from the first ingredient to the last, sorted by what each one does about that problem.
What actually makes a sunscreen wearable on oily skin?
Three things, and none of them is the SPF figure.
The first is the filter blend's own oiliness. Organic filters are dissolved into an oil phase, because that is how they work, so a formula built only around them starts out greasy and has to be engineered back toward dry.
The second is what does that engineering. Silicone type ingredients and polymer powders sitting high on the list are the standard way to give a filter blend a dry finish, and they are visible on the label if you know the names.
The third is the leftover. A film that stays tacky is a film you will not layer a second coat onto, and a second coat is worth more than any difference between two products at the same rating.
We wrote out the filter classes themselves in mineral and organic filters.
S.NATURE Aqua 365 UV Sun Cream
The most deliberately matte formula of the four. Four organic filters and no mineral filter, with polymethylsilsesquioxane third and caprylyl methicone eighth, which is a silicone powder and a light silicone fluid sitting above most of the rest of the list. That pairing is the standard construction for a dry down.
Niacinamide is eighth, high enough to be a real inclusion. Panthenol, allantoin, beta glucan and a hyaluronate set follow. No fragrance ingredient, no essential oil, no drying alcohol.
The rating is printed identically on the brand page, the aggregator listing and the ingredient database, and Korean rules require a passed test before that pairing can be printed at all.
One trap for spec sheet shoppers. A Korean price comparison site classifies this as a hybrid organic and mineral product, and there is no zinc oxide and no titanium dioxide anywhere on the list. The suitable for acne prone skin line also appears only on a third party ingredient database rather than on the brand's own page, with no test attached.
Filter type: organic, four filters Fragrance-free: yes
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Fresh Sun Serum SPF 50+ PA++++
The lightest texture here and the widest filter spread, with five organic filters covering both ends and three of them leaning UVA. A serum body rather than a cream, which is the format most likely to get applied generously because it does not drag.
Niacinamide sits sixth. A large hyaluronate block runs through the middle. No fragrance, no essential oil.
Two things to check against your own situation before buying. The list carries retinyl palmitate, a vitamin A ester and one of the categories usually avoided in pregnancy, so this is not the one to pick while pregnant. Several ingredients also sit on the standard comedogenicity watch lists, which are a weak evidence base built on animal assays of neat materials and are still worth knowing about if you congest easily.
The brand's line about squalane, allantoin and ectoin delivering intense moisture is directionally fine and entirely unquantified. All three are real, all three sit in the middle third, and no concentration is published for any of them.
Filter type: organic, five filters Fragrance-free: yes
Mediheal Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum Trace Repair

A serum format built for blurring, which is the other route to a wearable finish. Methyl methacrylate crosspolymer sits sixth and polymethylsilsesquioxane fourteenth, both polymer powders, alongside a dimethicone crosspolymer further down. Those are soft focus and oil absorbing materials rather than emollients.
Four organic filters carry the protection, including octocrylene. Niacinamide is ninth. Madecassoside and the rest of the centella set sit further back. The product holds a UV protection functional cosmetic registration, which is a passed regulatory standard rather than marketing language, and it is the strongest evidence on this page.
Two claims to discount. A 24 hour protection line has no reapplication study behind it anywhere and runs against how any sunscreen behaves on a face through a day. And a celebrity tagline is a celebrity tagline.
The reason this one is not our first pick for most people is the scent block. A fragrance ingredient is on the list along with four essential oils, cedarwood, patchouli, mugwort and rosemary. If your oily skin is also reactive, this is the wrong end of the shelf.
Filter type: organic, four filters Fragrance-free: no
Goodal Clear Houttuynia Soothing Moisture Sun Cream
The baseline choice, and the most conservative label of the four. Four organic filters, nothing mineral, twenty nine ingredients, and no fragrance, no essential oil and no drying alcohol across all of them.
The SPF 50+ PA++++ rating sits in the mandatory product information block rather than in the marketing text, which makes it one of the few numbers on a sunscreen box you can take at face value.
It is less engineered toward matte than the three above, so on very oily skin expect a slightly dewier finish. In exchange you get the shortest list and the fewest things to react to.
Watch the retailer tags on this one. At least one retailer files it as a mineral sunscreen and there is no zinc oxide or titanium dioxide on it, and a second tags it for sensitive skin while the product's own mandatory field says all skin types. Trust the ingredient list over the tag.
Filter type: organic, four filters Fragrance-free: yes
How we picked these
Three checks, applied identically.
The filter list had to be readable and the filters named individually rather than described as a complex. Two Korean sunscreens in our material have no retrievable ingredient list at all, so they are not here regardless of how they are reviewed.
The rating had to come from a surface that means something. A figure in the mandatory information block or a functional cosmetic registration counts. A figure appearing only on retailer listings is noted as such.
Fragrance and essential oil content is stated either way, because it decides the purchase for some readers before texture does.
What we did not use: sales rank, and any claim of a matte finish not traceable to a material on the list.
What none of these will do
Reduce how much oil you make. Nothing topical here acts on sebum output, and a formula that feels matte at ten is managing the surface rather than the gland.
Survive a full day without a second coat. This is the whole point of the piece. Film breaks down with sweat, friction and touching your face, and no rating is a duration.
Replace the amount you skipped. Half the recommended quantity does not give you half the number on the box, it gives you meaningfully less than half, which is the single most consequential thing to know about sunscreen.
Common questions
Does a higher SPF mean I can apply less?
No, and this is the most common way people end up underprotected. The rating is defined at a fixed thickness, so a higher number applied thinly can land below a lower number applied properly.
Is a sunscreen serum as protective as a cream?
The rating is the rating regardless of texture. What changes is how likely you are to use enough and to reapply, which is a real difference in outcome without being a difference in the number.
Will a mattifying sunscreen break me out?
Not as a class. Silicone powders and polymer blurring agents are not the ingredients most associated with congestion, and if you do react, the thing to look at is the whole list rather than the finish.
How do I reapply over makeup?
Imperfectly, and it still beats not reapplying. A serum format decanted onto fingertips and pressed rather than rubbed disturbs less than a cream, which is one more reason the two serums above are on this list.
If you are holding a sunscreen and cannot tell whether the matte claim comes from anything real, send us the listing and we will find the ingredient it rests on.
