Fungal acne safe Korean skincare, and what that phrase can honestly mean

Fungal acne safe is one of the most searched phrases in skincare and one of the least well defined. Before the list, the part that most lists skip.
The yeast involved, Malassezia, lives on almost everyone's skin and feeds on certain lipids. The avoidance lists that circulate online are built from that: chain length windows for fatty acids and their esters, plus polysorbates, polyethylene glycol compounds and fermented oil derivatives.
Those lists come from laboratory growth substrate work, not from testing finished products on faces. Nobody has run a challenge trial on the moisturizer you are holding. So screening an ingredient list against them tells you a product does not contain the flagged classes. It does not tell you the product will not cause a breakout, and it does not tell you a flagged product will.
We think that is still worth doing, because it is the only check available and it costs nothing. We just would not call the result a guarantee, and neither should anyone else.
Below are five Korean products that screen clear, forming a complete routine, with what the screen actually found in each.
How we screened
Against the usual classes: free fatty acids in the flagged chain length window, fatty esters in that window, polysorbates, polyethylene glycol compounds, and fermented oil derivatives.
Where an ingredient sat near a boundary we looked at it rather than waving it through, and we say so below. A screen that never names its close calls is not a screen, it is a marketing claim with extra steps.
And we checked fragrance separately, because irritation and yeast are different problems and a lot of products solve one while creating the other. All five below are fragrance-free.
Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser

The wash step, and the only one on this page that also publishes a pH range.
The surfactant deck is synthetic and amino acid based rather than soap based: a cocoyl isethionate leading, then a taurate, coco betaine and a cocoyl glycinate, with citric acid on the list. Glycerin sits third. Allantoin, panthenol, sea water and a ceramide follow.
Nothing on it matches the flagged substrate classes. Note that a potassium cocoate is present, which is a soap, though in a formula led by four milder surfactants with an acid buffer it does not undo the acidic positioning.
There is no fragrance ingredient, though chamomile flower oil is on the list as an essential oil.
The brand's own advice is worth taking: on makeup days use this as a second cleanse rather than expecting it to work alone.
Screen: clear Fragrance-free: yes
Isntree Ultra Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Toner
The toner step, and the best illustration on this page of what a careful screen looks like.
Read against a thirty four item list, the formula carries no free fatty acid, no fatty ester in the flagged window, no polysorbate, no polyethylene glycol compound and no fermented oil derivative.
Two entries deserved a second look rather than a quick pass, and this is the useful part. Sodium stearoyl hyaluronate and sodium oleoyl hyaluronate both carry an eighteen carbon acyl group, which is exactly the chain length the lists flag. In both cases that chain is covalently bound to a water soluble hyaluronate backbone and used at humectant level, so the material behaves as a modified polysaccharide salt rather than as a free fatty acid or an oil phase. That is why they are not counted, and it is a judgment rather than an automatic result.
The formula itself is a light hydrating toner: water and low viscosity glycols in the first positions, which is why it dries down fast, with three hyaluronate forms. No fragrance, no essential oil, no drying alcohol.
The three second hydration hashtag names a sensory speed with no endpoint, and the all day claim goes further than anything measured for it.
Screen: clear, with two entries examined and excluded Fragrance-free: yes
Abib Hyaluronic Boom Serum Water Drop

The serum step, and another one with a close call worth naming.
Twenty nine ingredients, screened clear against all the flagged classes. Two entries were looked at rather than folded in silently. Behenyl alcohol is a twenty two carbon fatty alcohol, a chain length most reference lists treat as low risk next to the sixteen and eighteen carbon alcohols that dominate the flagged sets. Neopentyl glycol dicaprate is a diester built on a ten carbon acid, which some lists discuss as a lower confidence secondary case rather than a clear trigger.
Sodium hyaluronate is disclosed at a specific figure here, which is rare and useful. The blue tint is a gardenia extract, which the brand states and which checks out.
One thing to plan around if you use this before makeup. Carbomer, acacia gum, dextrin and xanthan gum are on the list, which is the group that produces a cushioned feel and also the group that rolls if you go over it too soon. The brand's claim that it layers without sitting on top has nothing behind it.
Screen: clear, with two entries examined and excluded Fragrance-free: yes
S.NATURE Aqua Squalane Moisturizing Cream
The moisturizer step, and the one with the most useful disclosure of the five.
Twenty seven ingredients with no polysorbate, no classic fatty ester or fatty alcohol entry and no polyethylene glycol compound, so nothing matches the flagged classes at all. This is the cleanest screen on the page.
Squalane is printed at one hundred and fifty thousand parts per million, which is fifteen percent, and it is the formula's only occlusive. Six hyaluronate family entries follow. There is no fragrance and no essential oil.
Squalane is worth a note here because it is the exception people ask about. It is a saturated hydrocarbon rather than a fatty acid or a triglyceride, which is why it does not appear on the avoidance lists despite being an oil in everyday language.
One caveat the brand does not carry the blame for: the ingredient list we screened is third party sourced rather than published by the brand, so this screen is only as good as that list.
Screen: clear Fragrance-free: yes
Dr.G Green Mild Up Sun+
The sunscreen step, which is where most fungal acne routines fall apart.
There is exactly one UV filter, zinc oxide, and no organic filter anywhere, so the mineral only positioning is verifiable rather than asserted. There is no fragrance and no essential oil.
On the screen, the ester content skews to medium chain caprylate and caprate forms and polyglycerol isostearate emulsifiers, a profile the reference lists generally treat as lower risk than the classic twelve to eighteen carbon offenders. None of those classic offenders appears: no isopropyl myristate, no oleic acid.
Two things to know that have nothing to do with yeast. No brand controlled page for this product survived our collection, so the protection rating comes from retailers who agree with each other rather than from a label reading. And the marketing names two ingredients working together while only one of them is on the list we could verify.
Screen: clear, medium chain esters only Fragrance-free: yes
What this list cannot do for you
It cannot tell you these products will not break you out. The screen checks composition against a heuristic list, and a heuristic list is not a clinical result.
It cannot diagnose anything. Malassezia folliculitis and acne look similar enough that people routinely treat one as the other for months. If small uniform bumps are not responding to anything, that is a question for a doctor rather than a shopping list.
And it cannot cover what you do outside the routine. Occlusion, sweat, heat and hair products all matter, and none of them is on an ingredient list.
Common questions
Is squalane safe for fungal acne?
It is a saturated hydrocarbon rather than a fatty acid or triglyceride, which is why it does not appear on the avoidance lists. One of the products above is built on it at a disclosed fifteen percent, which makes it a useful test case if you want to find out on your own skin.
Are all esters a problem?
No, and this is the most common misreading. The lists flag a chain length window, not esters as a class. Medium chain caprylate and caprate esters sit below that window, and very long chain fatty alcohols sit above it. Several products above carry esters and still screen clear for exactly that reason.
Why do so many sunscreens fail the screen?
Because the emollients that make a sunscreen cosmetically pleasant are often exactly the flagged esters. A mineral filter with medium chain esters, like the one above, is one of the few ways this category gets past the screen without feeling like paint.
Should I trust a brand that says fungal acne safe on the box?
Treat it as a claim about composition rather than a tested outcome, and check the list yourself. No regulator defines the phrase, no test underlies it, and the brand is screening against the same heuristic list you would use.
If you have a product you suspect and cannot work out which ingredient it is, send us the list and we will screen it and show you the close calls.
