What is this product?

Ongredients prints the retinoid amount inside the ingredient list itself: 0.2 percent retinaldehyde, item 12 of 61. Retinaldehyde is one enzymatic step from retinoic acid where retinol takes two, so at the same number it works harder and it stings sooner on skin new to retinoids, and the standard retinoid caution in pregnancy applies to it. The label sets the terms of use directly: evening only, with sunscreen at the end of the next morning's routine, starting at two or three times a week and building up as skin allows, after a patch test on the inner arm or behind the ear. Redness, stinging and flaking are named on the label as possible, with the instruction to cut back or stop if irritation persists, and exfoliating products are to be kept out of the routine alongside it. The bakuchiol the name leads with is the weaker half: it sits at 35 of the same list with no amount printed against it. Opened, it is meant to be used within six months, because retinal darkens and develops an odour as it oxidises.

What makes it different?

Eight hyaluronic acid forms run the length of the list, from sodium hyaluronate at 13 to potassium hyaluronate at 57, with niacinamide up at 7 and the palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 pair at 52 and 54. Real effort goes into keeping the retinal alive: diethylhexyl syringylidenemalonate at 26, tocopherol at 45 and a hindered phenolic antioxidant at 48 are the kind of stack an unstable aldehyde needs. Ceramide NP at 38 and cholesterol at 40 give a partial barrier set, since no free fatty acid joins them anywhere in the 61 ingredients. There is no fragrance entry and no drying alcohol among those 61 either, and it comes in 30ml.
