Korean sheet masks: four labels, and the ten ingredient count that is really one

One mask prints ten hyaluronates and nine are at ten parts per billion. Ten of sixteen Korean sheet masks disclose a figure, and the counts are where they fail.

Picks

Sheet masks are a good category for learning to read a label, because the failure mode is so consistent.

It is the count. Ten types of this, five types of that, a complex of six. The counts are almost always exactly right, which is what makes them effective. What they leave out is that one member of the group is doing all the work and the rest are present at levels three to five orders of magnitude smaller.

Of the sixteen Korean sheet masks we read, ten print a concentration for something. Nine are fragrance-free, five carry essential oils, and none carries a pregnancy caution ingredient, which makes this the cleanest format on that axis of any we have looked at.

One more thing worth saying up front. Wear time is recorded on some of these and absent on others, and the sheet material is almost never stated anywhere. If a page tells you about its fabric, it is usually telling you a marketing name rather than a specification.

Mediheal Hyaluronate Essential Mask Ultra Hydration

Product photo of Hyaluronate Essential Mask Ultra Hydration

The single best example of the counting problem in Korean skincare, and the brand printed every number that reveals it.

Sodium hyaluronate is eighth of 44, at 2,000 parts per million. Then nine more hyaluronate family entries run from position 35 to 42, each at 10 parts per billion.

Count them and the page is right: there really are ten. Machine counting the hyaluronate tokens returns ten in the Korean list and ten in the English one, so nobody rounded up.

Now convert. Ten parts per billion is 0.000001 percent. The first figure is larger by a factor of about two hundred thousand. So the multi weight architecture the page describes is real on the label and absent in the formula: one hyaluronate is doing the hydrating and nine are supplying the number.

We wrote about exactly this pattern in counting the hyaluronic acids, and this is the cleanest specimen of it we have found.

Two other claims to set aside. A line about delivering moisture to 25 skin layers uses a unit that has no agreed definition, and the nearest anatomical referent is conventionally counted at roughly 15 to 20. And a German dermatological certification does exist in the material around this brand, but it attaches to two different products in the line rather than to this one.

The cooling sensation is evaporative. Searches for menthol, camphor and peppermint return nothing, so a soaked sheet on 32 degree skin feels cold because water is leaving it.

Disclosed: 10 of 10 hyaluronates, from 2,000 parts per million down to 10 parts per billion Fragrance-free: yes

Mediheal Madecassoside Essential Mask Blemish Repair

Product photo of Madecassoside Essential Mask Blemish Repair

A purity figure and a dose figure on the same page, pointing in opposite directions.

Madecassoside is eighteenth of 41, printed at 50 parts per million.

The headline advertises 98 percent purity madecassoside. That is a legitimate raw material specification and it is not a lie. But purity of the input says nothing about how much of it reaches your skin, and the same label answers that question in the other direction. Fifty parts per million is 0.005 percent.

A reader who takes 98 percent as a strength figure has been led to a number four orders of magnitude away from the disclosed one. That is the trap, and it is a common one: a percentage that describes the ingredient in the drum, printed next to a product that contains very little of it.

Madecassoside itself is the best studied centella triterpene for redness, so the mechanism is real. The published soothing work sits well above 50 parts per million, and the brand cites no study of its own.

Wear time is stated here: 10 to 20 minutes, then pat in the remainder. That is more than most masks tell you.

There is a fragrance entry and four essential oils, including juniper, patchouli, mugwort and rosemary, which is worth knowing on a mask sold for stressed skin.

Disclosed: madecassoside at 50 parts per million Fragrance-free: no

Torriden DIVE IN Mask

Product photo of DIVE IN Mask

The cleanest of the four, and a good example of a claim that is nearly right.

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is ninth of 31, at 300 parts per million. Thirty one entries is short for a sheet mask and the whole list reads easily.

There is no fragrance entry, no essential oil, no drying alcohol and no pregnancy caution ingredient. For a simple hydrating mask that is exactly the construction you want.

The claim to look at is depth. The page says it fills skin with moisture from deep inside, and that half does not hold: even the smallest hyaluronic acid fragments act within the outer layer, and the crosspolymer at position 5 is a swelling network that stays on the surface by design. The other half of the same sentence, about relieving the tight feeling, is well matched to what the formula does.

The vegan claim splits in a useful way. A certifying body is named, but only on a retail specification table rather than on the badge itself, and clean is a marketing category with no legal definition and no agreed exclusion list.

Wear time is 15 to 20 minutes per the listing that carries this mask's ingredient block.

One honest note the brand makes: it suggests following the mask with its own serum. That is fair, and neither product carries an occlusive, so the combination still depends on a third step to hold what it deposits.

Disclosed: hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid at 300 parts per million Fragrance-free: yes

ShionLe Laminaria Collagen Firming Mask

The one where the ingredient in the name sits behind the alcohol and the fragrance.

Soluble collagen is nineteenth of 57, at 50 parts per million. A laminaria extract follows at 22, at 10 parts per million.

Now look at what the brand put higher up. Denatured alcohol is fifth. Fragrance is fourteenth. Both are far ahead of the ingredient the product is named after, and both are ingredients a buyer with reactive skin would want to know about before a twenty minute occluded wear.

On the collagen itself: soluble collagen is a large hydrophilic protein that does not cross the outer layer, so at 50 parts per million or at any level it behaves as a surface humectant. We went through that in our collagen piece.

The firmness claim is the one that fails outright. The five peptides sit at positions 53, 54, 55, 56 and 57 of 57, which is to say the last five entries on the list. And the regulatory row states plainly that no functional cosmetic filing applies, so the product is not registered for wrinkle improvement.

Credit where it is due, though. The brand's own texture hashtag checks out twice over: carbomer at 10 with triethanolamine at 13 make a neutralised acrylic gel, xanthan gum is at 12, and reported use agrees, with the word for that dense, springy texture appearing in 310 mentions across 1,798 reviews.

Wear time is 15 to 20 minutes per the brand's usage text. Treat this as a texture and comfort mask rather than a repair step, and do not use it on a night you used a retinoid or an acid.

Disclosed: soluble collagen at 50 parts per million, laminaria extract at 10 Fragrance-free: no

How to buy a sheet mask

Count the count. When a page advertises ten types of something, look for the figures. If nine of the ten are printed in parts per billion, you have a roster and one working ingredient. The counts are usually honest and almost always incomplete.

Separate purity from dose. A 98 percent pure raw material at 50 parts per million is still 50 parts per million. Purity describes the drum, not the mask.

Read the top five entries, not the hero ingredient. On one mask here the named ingredient is nineteenth while denatured alcohol is fifth and fragrance is fourteenth. Under twenty minutes of occlusion, the things near the front matter more than usual.

Occlusion amplifies whatever is underneath. Do not put an acid or a retinoid on immediately before a sheet mask. A sheet held against skin turns whatever is beneath it into an occluded application, which raises effective exposure, and several of these masks say so in their own way.

And do not expect the fabric claims to mean anything. Sheet material is essentially never specified in this category, and the one absorption ratio we found was a number with no denominator attached.

For the ingredient behind most of these claims, hyaluronic acid basics covers what it does and the step people skip after it.

Common questions

How long should I leave a sheet mask on?

Where these brands state a time, it is 10 to 20 minutes. Past that the sheet starts drying and can draw moisture back off the skin, which is the one thing a hydrating mask should not do.

Should I rinse after a sheet mask?

No, pat the remaining essence in, then seal it. None of these masks contains an occlusive, so whatever they deposit needs a moisturizer over it or it leaves with the water.

Are expensive sheet masks better?

Not in any way these labels show. The best disclosed figure in this piece and the most complete ingredient counting both come from the same mass market brand.

Do sheet masks do anything a serum cannot?

They hold a large volume of essence against skin under occlusion for a fixed time. That is a real delivery difference. It is also why they amplify anything you put on underneath.

Is a hydrogel or biocellulose sheet better than cotton?

We cannot tell you from these labels, because the sheet material is almost never stated. When a page describes its fabric it is usually giving you a marketing name rather than a fibre, a weave or a weight.

If you have a sheet mask advertising a count of ingredients, send us the listing and we will check how many of them carry a number.
