A Korean routine from one Olive Young trip: six steps, six products

The usual mistake on a first Korean skincare haul is buying six versions of the same step. Four hydrating toners, two essences that are also hydrating toners, and nothing to seal any of it in.

A routine is a sequence of different jobs, not a pile of one job. Remove, wash, hydrate, treat, seal, protect. Six products, six functions, and any one of them can be swapped without breaking the others.

Here is that sequence filled in with six products from the same shelf, chosen the way we choose anything: by reading the full ingredient list first and saying plainly where the brand's own claims outrun it.

The first cleanse takes off sunscreen and makeup so the second one can be mild. A cleansing water is the least intimidating way to start if you have never done this, and the easiest to use in a hotel bathroom.

Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleansing Water runs a mild nonionic ester as its main surfactant with a secondary solubilizer further down, on a short nineteen entry list carrying deep sea water, three hyaluronate forms, panthenol, allantoin and ceramide NP.

No fragrance, no sulfate, no soap, no denatured alcohol. The weakly acidic positioning is marketed with a graphic rather than a number, so read it as a formulation posture rather than a measured pH.

Reviewers report absence of irritation more than any other single thing, which is the property that matters most in a step you use every night.

Step two, wash: beplain Mung Bean Weakly Acidic Cleansing Foam

The second cleanse removes what water can lift. It should be boring, and this one nearly is.

Three amino acid class surfactants, no fatty acid and no alkali anywhere on the list. That is the composition a weakly acidic wash actually requires, rather than a claim printed over a soap base.

The one thing that makes it not boring is a real physical exfoliant. Mung bean powder and mung bean extract are the only two ingredients on the list with printed concentrations, and the grain is the single most mentioned property in reported use.

That means this is a slightly abrasive wash by design. Good for rough texture and congestion. Wrong for inflamed skin, and wrong for anyone already using an acid or a retinoid, which is why the treatment step below matters to this choice.

Step three, hydrate: S.NATURE Aqua Oasis Toner

This is the water step, and we picked one with a complication in it on purpose.

The first eight positions are a straightforward humectant deck of water, glycols, glycerin, betaine, panthenol and allantoin. Then gluconolactone appears at position ten, papain at sixteen, and eight hyaluronate forms across the middle of the list.

So it is a hydrating toner with two separate routes to exfoliation folded in, one acid and one enzyme, sold on hydration. That is why some people report shedding from something they bought as a moisture step.

None of it is disclosed by concentration, and no pH is published, which means the gentle part of gentle exfoliation cannot be checked from outside. There is also no irritation or efficacy testing for this product at all.

Step four, treat: MEDICUBE Zero Pore One-Day Peptide Serum

The treatment step is the one that targets your actual complaint. We picked a pore focused serum because visible pores and texture are the most common reason people start a Korean routine in the first place.

What is genuinely here: niacinamide and adenosine, which are Korea's own notified functional actives for brightening and for wrinkle and elasticity work, plus an exfoliating acid trio of glycolic, salicylic and capryloyl salicylic acid. The product carries a Korean functional cosmetic certification. None of those five discloses a concentration.

What is not really here, despite the name: the peptides. There are ten of them, individually named, and every one is disclosed at parts per billion. The brand printed those figures itself, which is how you can tell. A product named for its peptides is doing its work with niacinamide and acids instead.

That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to expect what the formula can deliver rather than what the name promises.

Step five, seal: Torriden DIVE IN Soothing Cream

The cream is what stops the water from the previous two steps leaving again. That is its whole job and it is the step people skip most.

Torriden DIVE IN Soothing Cream is a light fragrance-free gel cream with five hyaluronate forms, allantoin, panthenol and a long botanical list. It is comfortable, it disappears under sunscreen, and reviewers converge on light and not greasy.

Here is the honest limitation. There is no ceramide, no squalane and only one light emollient on the list, so despite the cream label this does not seal much. It is closer to a very light lotion in function. For oily and combination skin that is exactly right. For dry skin it is not enough on its own, and no amount of layering will make a low occlusion formula behave like a rich one.

The brand's own storefront carries eight footnoted clinical figures for cooling, redness and hydration. All are from small, brand run, uncontrolled studies, and several bundle immediate use readings that overstate how long the effect lasts.

Swap it if: your cheeks crack in winter, in which case you want a ceramide rich cream instead

Step six, protect: Mediheal Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum Trace Repair

Sunscreen is the step with the most evidence behind it and the least glamour, so buy the one you will actually reapply.

This is a mineral free formula on four organic filters, in a watery sun serum texture rather than a cream, with madecassoside and a centella complex and a four form hyaluronate stack behind them. It carries an official triple functional registration covering brightening, wrinkle care and UV protection, which is a regulatory status rather than a brand claim.

Two things to know before you buy. It is a scented product, so if you built the rest of this routine to avoid fragrance, this is the step that breaks that streak and there are unscented alternatives on our fragrance-free list. And the brand's own official page publishes no protection rating at all; that figure comes from retail listings instead, which is a strange gap on the one specification a sunscreen buyer needs most.

Putting it together

Morning: wash, toner, serum, cream, sunscreen. Skip the first cleanse, since there is nothing to dissolve.

Evening: cleansing water, wash, toner, serum, cream.

Introduce them one at a time, three or four days apart. If you start all six on the same evening and your face objects on Thursday, you have six suspects and no way to narrow them.

And two of these steps exfoliate. The foam does it physically, the toner does it two different chemical ways, and the treatment serum has an acid trio in it. Running all three at full frequency is more than most skin wants. Pick one to do daily and let the other two happen twice a week, or swap the toner for a plain one.

Common questions

Can I really build a routine from one shopping trip?

Yes, and it is cheaper than assembling it piece by piece at home, which is most of why people fly back with a full suitcase. What you cannot do is know in advance which of six new products your skin will object to, so introduce them slowly.

What if I only have room for three?

Cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen. That is a complete routine. The toner, serum and first cleanse are refinements on top of it, and a well chosen three beats a badly chosen six every time.

Do I need an essence, an ampoule and a serum?

No. Those three words describe overlapping territory with no fixed technical boundary between them, and a Korean shelf will happily sell you all three doing the same job. One water step and one treatment step is the structure.

Is the ten step routine real?

It exists, and almost nobody runs it daily. Treat extra steps as options for specific problems rather than as a ladder you are supposed to climb. Six is already a full routine and five is a good one.

How long before I know if this is working?

Hydration changes you can feel within days. Texture takes about a month, and anything involving marks or tone takes longer than most people are willing to wait. If something stings or flushes in the first week, that is not adjustment and you should stop that product rather than push through.
